Carbon Fibre muffler shortening

Hey guys,

Well i have a medieval cannon as a muffler on my zx10. But its partially light weight being made of carbon fibre.

However its too big and too quiet, so i was wondering what peoples experiences are or work arounds for cutting up carbon fibre. I was going to tackle it alone no problems, but since we recently moved dont have any saws etc etc so i decided its easier for a shop to cut it and ill rivet it back together. However 2 exhaust shops dont feel very good about cutting it as they are worried it might splinter or crack. The carbon fibre looks to be in good condition and hasn't been effected by the heat yet, so i assume the packing is still ok.

But never cut a carbon exhaust so bit of guidence please

"apparently" (as they say, never believe what you read on the interwebs)

you should put shit loads of tape around where you want to cut. wrap it around there you're cutting and cut through the tape.

and ALWAYS cut from the outside in, meaning, turn the muffler and you cut it, dont just saw top to bottom, or the bottom will splinter.

if the end is a bit messy, remember the cap will cover the last 1cm or so anyway.

hmmm ok, i knew about the shitload of tape trick. Should this be best attempted via a hand powered saw or something that uses electricity ?

Saki, go to bunnings and buy yourself a 100mm Ozito or other cheap brand angle grinder ($10-20) also while you are there pick yourself up a set of the cheap and nasty 100mm diamond blades, about $5-10 for 3 or 4.

Bring it home, set up your tape on the can and run the diamond blade through nice and steady.

Peel off the tape and get a bit of 240 paper around the cut just to soften before putting end cap back on.

The rest is as per any other can, just don't be impatient

Hvae u tried it with carbon fibre tho, for some reason everyone i speak to keeps saying its going to splinter and crack and fuck up and i dont want that to happen and never done it so! just checkin!!

i used grinder with metal cutting disc. it spins so fast it doesnt catch on it like a hack saw would.

Mate I cut carbon all the time, you need the speed in the blade, don't stress, relax and let the blade do the work don't force the cut, just let the speed of the blade slice through. Wait till you see the screen on the Zed, carbon trimming all good

ok, ill take ya word on it then, so metal cutting wheel ?

I gotta get some new tools anyway, so ill go down to bunning tomorrow see wat they got! So will get angle grinder, some decent wheels and bag-o-rivets!

Also once i got it out, i assume its mostly any baffles (if there is any, which i doubt seems straight through) and the fibreglass packing that reduces noise, i want to get more sound out of it, i want at least 50% more noise! cause its quiet atm!

I am thinking i might be able to take about 10-12cm out to start with, but small cuts and work my way down!

Not writing it all out again Yours may have a baffle set up in it and if so you are better of to replace core tube and re-pack than shorten .... (unless it looks stock ZX12ish!?)

na its Gianelli pipe, and looking down the guts of it there are no baffles! Its just long and feels pretty solid!
