New Speed Cams in Melbourne

Post by seiko1 »

Just a heads up on a new speed camera system they are testing. It's a cylindrical pole about 2m high with 3 Perspex stripes on it (hidden cameras, one for each lane of the highway), and there's some matching sensors on the far side of the road in the gutter.

Please be aware that big brother is watching. When you see the stripes it means that there is a speed camera. The locations for these new cameras are listed below. The one in question is located at the bottom of a very steep hill. Of course it is illegal for a radar or mobile speed camera to be set up in these sort of positions but its ok if its fixed.

Revenue raising MF's!
I have saved all of the locations as a Word doc so when I get to work I can print it out.
I will put it on the wall where I keep my riding gear so that everytime I gear up, I can check if I am going down any of those routes and be sure not to make a unnecessary donations to the Victorian Government.
One more thing to think about when on the road.
Thank you Victorian Government.

Well the more time we spend looking at our speedo's...............................
Those new cams do look awefully vulnerable don't they
Just wear a sign that says "safety camera destroyer in area in the interests of public safety"
because if you have a sign posted you can get away with daylight robbery, can't you councils?

Being so low to the ground and easy to access, I wonder if people would be tempted to put black tape or black spray paint over the black, lens protecting stripes?
Black paint and tape would be difficult to notice to the casual observer.
I mean, I personally would never consider such a thing as it is illegal but I am sure that some people may.

Not sure I understand the big deal.
In NSW all speed cameras are pretty well sign-posted giving a fair amount of advanced warning - 3 signs reminding you there's one ahead before the camera itself.
Do they not signpost them in Vic?

If you're one who speeds, you'd be keeping your eye out for such signs, or sitting cops, or whatever else, and can slow down. If you're not what do you care?

Now don't get me wrong - I don't like them much either, but they are well sign-posted and easy to avoid. Where it does get annoying is like (for those in NSW) on the Pacific Hwy between Wahroonga and Pymble where it's almost all school zone and there's 2 (or is it 3?) close together - there's so much signage that it's easy for it to become background.

My 2c/flameware-starter.

ok - no signage makes it a somewhat different story - that'd suck

No signage?! That would make it really bad.

I got done twice in the same day at the same spot (M4, Cumberland Hwy each way) and we have signs. Just completely forgot and was in such a rush that day.

I'd be stuffed if I lived in Vic.

Let's just say we are all more familiar with the face of our speedo's than we
are with the road surface
How can that be safe?

I LOVE the NSW camera system, here in Vic they are often at the other side of an underpass hence you don't see them till they take your photo. As I mentioned on another site, if speed is such a killer and I have sped so much that I have managed to lose 13 points in 3 years (actually probably a few more if it wasn't for handballs) then clearly i'm a danger to myself and the general populace, so that being said, why, with my last offence when the fine was $110 and the 1 point would put me off the road for 6 months, was I let off when I asked for a court hearing??

My "theory" is that if someone were prone to take one of these offences all the way the whole speed camera system would be in deep shit, afaik all measurements need to have a standard, and there is no Aust standard for speed measuring devices, hence they would all be illegal means of raising revenue.

Now personally speaking I don't have the necessary $ to take my theory to the end degree, but I wish someone a lot richer than I would. The implications for the carious state govt's are absolutely massive if my theory were to be proven right.. how many people have lost licenses/jobs that would have to be compensated, plus all revenue raised by this method would have to be refunded...
