First response to his post takes the cake

2004 ZRX1200R
And on the seventh day Richo ended his work which he had made. Decided resting was for soft cox, straddled the REX and headed up the old road.
And it was good

Good one for the newbies to see!
Don't lube your chain with the engine running and in gear
If you use a rag always hold it on the bottom of the sprocket and make sure the
chain is exiting the sprocket
Reminds me of the old Alcan day's.....fingers off everywhere

This may be a dumb question but how do you let it idle while in gear? Wouldn't the bike stall? Never tried to do it that way, I put it up on the centre stand and rotate the chain by moving the rear wheel manually. Much safer IMHO.

Doesn't stall but you just keep doing it while off

when cleaning your chain
make sure the motor is NOT running
and turn the wheel by hand.
Better safe than sorry

Only when the clutch is grabbing slightly, older bikes will do this & it can possibly happen when your engine oil is coldSix Addict wrote:dont most wheels turn over on idle anyway??

Re: How NOT to clean your chain Warning VERY Graphic
Ouch! I'm still relatively new to bikes and this is a disturbing outcome.
I remember giving my old chain a spray with some WD40 whilst the bike was on the centre stand and in gear.
I never used a rag of any sort, I just sprayed from what I perceived to be a safe distance.
Thanks for the heads up, I think I'll always just rotate the wheel by hand from now on.
