Re: Crim and the cracking frame
i've heard of it on US, but not here...
my guess a fix would be a new frame... not as expensive as you may think.

Re: Crim and the cracking frame
Ok, well i ahave noticed a very small crack in the centre of the factory weld.
So to me i would assume rather than try and fast around with Kawasaki Australia which i am more than positive they wont be jack shit about anyway,
Im going to take it to a fabricating joint and get them to redo the weld for me. So that should be the ticket to fixing the issue, plus because its right in the centre of the weld rather than in the metal of the frame, should be a pretty straight forward job!

Re: Crim and the cracking frame
I actually did a search and there was a pic of a guy in the US that had the same kind of crack... Ill take a snap and pic it up.
I figured there is no point trying to deal with Kawasaki Australia as they will most likely tell me to get farked!

You could try but I think they'll play the "abuse" card, or claim its been stacked etc.Saki wrote:I actually did a search and there was a pic of a guy in the US that had the same kind of crack... Ill take a snap and pic it up.

Ok verdict is in!! I went to Kawasaki Team Moto in Maroochydore and they are going to try to get me a new frame.
Then went to the professional metal people and more so a guy that deals with fixing welds and doing up bike frames and he says
ITS NOT A CRACK!! yaaaayyy, but more just a tiny bit of stress on the frame and the paint and chipped off a little bit! So the metal isn't seperated its still all in 1 peice but just as the frame gets a bit of flex it can happen.
He was telling me about his DR650 and said the frame on that has the same kinds of marks from being jumped and bashed around! He said its nothing to worry about its normal for it to do that!
He did say however even if it got a crack it wouldn't happen very fast and it can be fixed pretty easily! Just a case of taking airbox and wat not out!

Re: Crim and the cracking frame
Good result mate.
Were Team Moto gong to try and get a frame gratis or are they thinking you're paying for it?

Re: Crim and the cracking frame
na i explained to them that Kawasaki have been giving people new frames so i assume they might do the same, but its gunna be $400 for an engineer to put a VIN on it and then 15 hours labour if you pay shop to pull down 1 bike and put it into the other.Glen wrote:Good result mate.

Either way im still a bit suss about the hairline mark on the weld, but if the pro looked at it which he had a good look and sounded genuine about it not just trying to fob me off, then i guess i'll take that as its ok!
He said the engine mounts are welded around the outer edge, not actually centre of hte tube welded to the frame, sounds a bit confusing but he showed me wat he ment, so that outer weld is more just a cover as its the inside of the frame which is the important weld!
So EVEN if it is cracked its not really important! I think thats why he said its not a huge concern!

Re: Crim and the cracking frame
also anyone else with a crim, check around under the fuel tank along those welds as well as the mounts that the crash knobs mount onto as that is the most prone places to crack.
Also out of interest what is the build date on others Crims, mine is an 04/04.
The early mode zx14's had a factory recall due to the same issue!

I had a really good look at it just before and the guy is right, looking at it its hairline and only on the surface and its pretty minor also, if it gets worse tho, she will be going in!
