GPX250 cam chain replacement

Post by garry »

I intend to replace the cam chain on my GPX250 in the near future. I have acquired a genuine Kawasaki replacement chain and the necessary gaskets etc. What I really need to know is exactly how to remove the old chain. I am assuming that I will remove the tensioner, both camshafts and the clutch assembly and drop the cam chain out through the right hand side of the motor after disengaging it from the crankshaft. Am I on the right track? The other thing I am not sure of is the big nut holding the clutch basket on - is it a left or right hand thread? Any advice will be much appreciated as the manual doesn't seem to detail this procedure. :D :D :D :D

Regards
Garry

That sounds like a fair way of doing it. Another way my local shop suggested to do it without taking the bottom end sideplate off is to split the chain and put the new chain on the old one and feed the new one through. You just need to be careful not to slip the timing or drop the end of the chain down the inside of the engine.

As to the nut, my guess is the nut rotates counter clockwise as the majority of engines are forward rotating (i.e. the chain rotates from the back of the head through to the front), which would just tighten up the nut that little bit more instead of loosening it.

If it hurts, you aren't doing it right.

ok the chain cant be split since its all joined, having the same problem myself, i cant get the chain off since there is a guard preventing me from taking the chain off.

The nut loosens anti clockwise.

fit the new chain onto the old & feed it through its less work
edit... don't whatever you do drop the chain in the big black hole, have someone on hand to help keep tension as you pull through the new one ;)

you will have to feed it through as there is a moulded plate sorta thing under the crank and you can't feed it out sideways.....attatch it to the old one as everyone has suggested makes it heaps easier!!!

well it would look like i have no idea and should just go to kawasaki and get them to put it in. The engine is installed now anyways i'll see how it goes. I have a new tensioner in and did the valves, That i know i can do right. Thanks Rob.
