Farked Fuel Pump

Post by Poyda »

My 96 ZX6 has been parked up for a while now, and i decided to get her going again last night after a bit of cosmetic work was completed. Now the fuel pump has failed.

Prior to this I had drained the tank and carbies back in Febuary as I knew it would be a while and didn't want the fuel going stale in the tank. Why did i do this you ask, well last time i parked the bike for a while, the pump sh@t itself, and I had left it with fuel in it, so this time i figured I'd drain it.

I was lucky last tie and had a spare pump, but this time, I don't have a spare, and I'm not even entertaining the thought of getting a price of Kawasaki, I'm sick of calling them thieves.

What i'm thinking is an aftermarket universal pump. I know it only needs to run between 11-16 kpa, I just need to find a reliable one.

Does anyone have any suggestions of universal pump brand, or a way of resurrecting my old pump.

Fuel pumps are a standard Kawasaki problem, the contacts corrode & fuse together. It's a simple fix, just take the black cap off the end, flick the contacts apart (they fuse together very lightly) & dress the contact surfaces with a piece of 600 - 800 grit sandpaper folded in half - or use your missus' emery board/stick/thing that she uses for her fingernails.
Give the contact surfaces a wipe to make sure there is no residue leftover & you're good to go.
Ex T.K.A. ZXR 750 RR
ZXR 7/9 L3 Streetfighter
ZX9 C Trackbike - ex Maccarocks & Slow & Wobbly... still a weapon!

Plus a ZX7 & a few ZXR Ls & ZX9 Bs & Cs in various stages of completion.

Yeah got it sorted. I'd keep a tight grip on that if I were you.

Did that....stupid thing it is too, but alas was not the problem. Seems the insides have seized up but soaking in carby clean is fixing it.

I've got an after market arrangement happening now, thanks guys
