new to the ZX9R

Post by mortaygo »

hi guys, I have had many bikes road and dirt, but just picked up a 94 ZX9R and this it is a sweet bike.

It is pretty tidy, just clicked over 80 000ks and needs a few things - first an oil change - haven't attemped it yet, but looks like the oil filter might be a turd to get at... Any tips on oil changes to make it easier or tips for young players?

Also the clutch slips a bit down low, if you dump the clutch (ala wheelie) it slips - or sounds like the back wheel is lighting up... Could I get away with just replacing the fibers or should I replace fibers and plates?

Other than that, it is pretty tidy, handles nice and goes very well.

Gidday Joe,

The oil filter can be a pain to get turning, without a filter removal tool there’s a couple of approaches you can take :

1. Messy : hammer a big Phillips head screwdriver right through it (out near the front end, rather than close to the cases) and use the leverage to turn it

2. Clean : get the correct sized hose clamp, tighten it right up, and then hammer against a Phillips head screwdriver in the screw-head to turn it. You may have to loosen and move the clamp round a couple of times, but this always works for me.

Re the clutch, you may even get away with slipping a washer under each of the spring bolts to preload it slight, but you're better off replacing the lot. if it's slipping, the steels will probably have turned blue anyway.

Cheers,
Brian

The B models are a pain in the arse to get the filter off if its tight, not much room in there...........

thanks guys. I will do oil and filter tonight, I have ordered some fibers only and will give the steels as light sand on a tile and wet and dry. I didn't think of some washers under the spring bolts to increase preload...

Oh and how do I attach pictures?

Washers on to of the springs WILL limit the travel.
On the 125GP bikes we used to get extra clutch "grip" by spreading the spring coils.

That said its not a big task on the b's to take the cover off and pull the clutch apart to measure the fibers & plates.

Vital bits from the manual..
