ZX12R wont start

Hi, i have a 2001 zx12 and have striped the teeth of the balancing gear on the crank
I have bought a second hand motor from a wrecker but don’t know what year it is and no one can tell me, I have been in contact with Kawasaki AUST and because it was an import they can’t help either, problem is I have fitted the new one and it wont go, it is like the timing is out, I have spoken to the local Kawasaki dealer with no help, I think maybe it’s a 2000 model as the ENG number is very low and maybe the 01 ECU is not talking to the new engine, I am waiting for an ECU out of a 00 and hope it will work, has anyone any ideas or come across this in the past
I have fuel and spark but its firing at the wrong time; I have tried changing all electrical bits from my old motor but didn’t work

The cam angle sensor on the 00 model is different to all the others, thats your problem.

i changed the sensor from the origonal motor with the 01with no luck and have now put the 00 back in, if the sensor is diferent than the 01 and the ECU from the 01 isnt working with the 00 electrics will the 00 ECU make the diferance with the 00 sensor back in, this is what i have been led to believe is the problem the (ECU)this is driving me nuts

It's not the sensor that bolts onto outside of the head it is were it picks it up off the end of the cam. Check the end off both cams and you'll see what i mean.

I changed the internal sensor no change still won’t start, just wants to lock up and back fire through intakes and chuff out black smoke as I am trying to start it,. Got hold of 00 ECU but they have different plugs so I couldn’t try it. If I disconnect the fuel or spark it will spin over with ease, its just like the plug leads are mixed up but as we know you cant change them

you have it right, the timing is incorrect

the question is why
