zx9r pinging

Post by TSZX9 »

I'm hoping some one on here may be able to help me....I have a 1997 model zx9r which I recently bought and after running fine for around 100km's developed a constant ping.

I thought it may have been from using standard unleaded instead of premium so I drained the tank and filled it with premium. It still has the ping in all the rev range but will come and go....But is still pinging 80% of the time.

Any ideas what this could be? could it need the valves done or maybe a cylinder is out?....Is a bit noisy at idle.

Any help or advice is much appreciated

Trev....

Trev are you sure it is Pinging , I have spoken to John and he said the only thing that has happened to him is the Thermo Fan
doesn't always work. Something I never new till I spoke to you and John.
Did you go through the Manual and did you go back to the standard pipe like I said ???????
Maybe it is lean with the Delkevic system ????
The noise at idle was what I thought slight clutch rattle which is not uncommon.
Just my thoughts .
I rode it only a hand full of times and never experienced any of this so I am at a loss.
Don't forget I still have the original chain guard and another front guard for you aswell.
Cheers mate

mate, I would suggest a re-jetting of the carbs. you should be able to buy a dyno jet kit suitable for a aftermarket pipe and have that installed. otherwise go back to the standard pipe.

It is really that bad ????? , Can't remember on those but do they have an advance retard mechanism on them ??? Maybe it is sticking.
Have you put the restricter back in the pipe ????
And also don't forget I told you John had the carbs off and cleaned then put them back on but never balanced them.
This could throw it out on idle which can make a small rattle seem worse.
Anyway back to the pinging. The Delkovic may just need rejetting maybe it is poor at midrange .
Wait till your brother gives you a hand with the pipe and remember watch out for the joining gasket ok.

mate I would not ride it whilst its pinging, need to have a re-jet of the carbs, also run premium 98 fuel.

pinging is generally due to incorrect ignition timing, poor fuel or bad jetting.

get it checked out by a mechanic if you can. also ask Gos, he knows heaps of shit like this !!
