BRISBANE - 2009 Sport ing Chance Lunch for the IUC at RBWB

Post by NewbieBikerGal »

Some of you may remember on the 11th of May, 2007; I was involved in a motorbike accident. Suffering from broken bones and serious internal organ damage, my family were informed that I had a 1% chance of surviving the first 24 hours.

Had it not been for the resources made available for my care, the vast knowledge and on-going research conducted by Professor Lipman and his dedicated team of intensive doctors, which includes Dr Holley, Dr Boots, Dr Finch and many others, along with the wonderful and incredible care of those unsung heroes, the nurses; I would not have been able to survive the 100 days I spent in the Intensive Care Unit, at The Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH). The RBWH is Queensland's largest and busiest hospital, with the emergency and intensive care units considered to be one of the best in the world, and as a direct result of receiving funding from the community for advanced research projects, RBWH saves hundreds of lives, one of those was mine. Research is not Government funded as we have a large public health system and relies on the commitment and generosity of corporate and community groups to drive the research that delivers the breakthroughs in improved patient treatment and ultimately hold the key to the future improvements.

This year, I am proud to say that we are hosting our second Sporting Chance Fundraising Luncheon, to be held on Sunday 16th August. Through a combination of many kind donations and great hosts for our event, last year we raised $11,000.00 for the Foundation. This year our aim is to hit the $30,000.00 mark and an important part of being able to achieve this goal, is the donation of items/gifts which can be auctioned off during the luncheon. As part of the sporting theme, we are seeking gifts that may be unique in nature or have a sporting theme connected to them. In the event you have access to or connections that could assist with the provision of such gifts, I would be so very grateful to hear from you or your representative.

The funds we raise provide invaluable financial assistance to the nurses by allowing them to attend highly specialised training conferences that provide them with advanced skills in intensive care/critical care, trauma and burns which would otherwise not be available due to funding restrictions. Our guest speaker this year is Professor Jeffery Lipman, MBBCh, DA (SA), FFA (CritCare) (SA), FJFICM, MD. Director of BTCCRC, Director of Department of Intensive Care Medicine (DICM), RBWH Professor, Anaesthesiology & Critical Care University of Queensland.

Once again, your heart felt support will be greatly appreciated, not only by me, but by all the families who have a loved one now or will have a loved one in the future that require the live saving treatment of critical care at the RBWH.

Please do not hesitate to contact myself at info@sashamaggiolo.com.au or Ari Panagiotou, Corporate Business Development Manager with the RBWH Foundation at ari.p@rbwhfoundation.com.au Should you require any media, I will me more than happy to post it through to you.

With my sincere thanks and appreciation,
Sasha
