Well I am glad you asked !! Here it is, for those who may not be familiar with.....the z750MX

First incarnation - small tank fitted.

Image

Current set-up - big 19l tank, for those long mountain runs

Image

On the summit of Mt Coree - highest mountain peak in the local ranges. Up there with my mate on his R80 G/S

Image

On the gas in the bush. With stock road gearing, the 7fiddy chookchaser is good for >160kmh on the dirt.... but it rarely sees >140.....

Image

There are plenty of other nutcases out there doing this shit. Here is old mate from Perth, on his Z1R....

Image

and gettin' it sideways.....

Image

and this is something that a good 'ole boy in the US knocked up for some hill-climb action. Thats a Z1000 motor installed into a KX500 frame  ....

Image

The old 750 has a couple of years under its belt now, and is reasonably well-sorted for the bush. It still needs the top-mounts for the rear shocks moved forward and down a bit, to gain some extra travel in the rear end. Laurie Smith, the guy doing the build on the ZX10R, was the bloke who helped me out with spring rates and shock lengths etc, when the z750 was being built. His advice was spot-on.

Apart from the suspenion mods still needed, the seat really needs a better mounting arrangement, and the starter clutch - doesn't.

But as Mick C has pointed out - the bike is really good in the dirt drags ( level-pegged Charlies KTM 590 the other weekend) , and you can basically point it anywhere that a *normal* dirt bike would go. Even steep hills and drop-off don't faze it at all. Its a great bike, and sounds shit-hot out in the boonies, with that 4-1 howl ..... :kuda: :kuda:

I will keep this thread updated with progress on the ZX10R chookie as it develops. My input to this rig is limited...............and Jonno - I promise to get some video of the bike in action mate :kuda: Should be able to jag a test-fang on it as well......

Here are some updated pics of this build. Laurie (owner) has been busy making a clay mold for the combined seat/tank unit. He is hoping for a capacity of about 12 litres, with a tank that also does duty as the seat base.

Here is Laurie's description of the tank/seat build.......

Notice in the pics the aluminium tray i have layed in the rear subframe, that tray will form the bottom of the fuel tank.
Upon which i will build up a mass of modeling clay and so form the shape that i desire.

First i will make a spiked wooden club, lets call it the battle club.Handle and dowel shown in photo.

Image

This battle club will be layed onto the tray first and i will buildup the clay around it.When the form is done, the battle club will allow me to lift the clay model up and suspend it. - Rough clay build-up of basic shape.

Image

Clay has been smoothed into better shape....

Next is to cut some corregations into the top so as to increase the stiffness of the top of the tank, where i will sit on it.
Then start sorting out the location of the fuel filler.

Image

Its out successfully, was heavy but manageable.Got it in my suspension vice ready to go.Will do the layup tomorrow lunchtime.

First layer done.As we are all aware it was a cold night last night which was good for me.i used a fast cure hardener, but the cold slows the reaction,so when finnished i warm the part and speed up the cure.
Next is to sand and prep the part for the final layer.

Image

And the build continues........the seat/tank unit will probably be finished during this week, as Laurie is working pretty hard on this project. I will need to be spending a few hours in his workshop one night sorting out all the electricals for the ECU etc......once thats completed, this bike will be getting pretty close.........next big job will be setting up the rear suspension with a longer shock and different linkages to obtain suspension travel that is a bit closer to a MX bike than a GP bike !!!

Stay tuned.........and I promise to get some video footage of this rig in action when Barry kicks it in the guts !!!! :kuda: :kuda:

You know how it is Mick !! a p-p-piece from here....and a p-p-piece from there !! :kuda: :kuda:

I will keep the updates coming on this build, Laurie also drops in here from time to time, he will be real happy with the feedback.

Not sure if Laurie has given this any consideration at this stage....but yeh, you are spot-on - a longer swingarm could help with stability....

Once it hits the dirt for the first time.......all will be revealed ....
