The rule is, you have to indicate when exiting the roundabout. So if you intend to go straight ahead you approach the roundabout with no indicator flashing then as you straighten up to exit thats when you indicate. I failed my P's test (car) for this very thing, the instructor took me thru 12 roundabouts and i never did it once.............never even knew of the rule at the time!!! It's a bullshit rule in my opinion.
As a road user and licence holder it's up to you to keep up to date with the rules, and not up to them to inform you of changes, at least thats the line they fed me!!
As for the "no longer giving way to the right" i believe it's a bit of both, you have no choice but to give way to the right as that is the flow of traffic you are entering. As far as it being "whoever was in it first" unfortunately some ppl interperit this as "if i don't touch the brakes and just fly through the roundabout at mach 10 then i have right of way". Which shits me big time, to the point where i've been tempted to continue driving my truck into their path but of course that would put me in the wrong wouldn't it!!

The silly thing about the situ. was that he never even mentioned any sort of punishment for NOT indicating, so If you feel safer/easier not indicating why bother.

He also totally overlooked the car which was INFRONT of him who actually didn't indicate, when I clearly did, but pulled me over instead. He wanted to pull me over, and just assumed I didn't indicate and was pissed when I caught him out.

As with alot of the road rules in this country they tend to be open to interperitation and many ppl have many different ideas on how they should read.

You are supposed to start indicating immediately after you pass the last exit to the one you want.

As a road user and licence holder it's up to you to keep up to date with the rules, and not up to them to inform you of changes, .........

They occasionally send out pamphlets to inform you of important changes to rules etc, but they aren't required to do it for every little thing. And unfortunately, most of the time, ignorance is no defence.

I got pulled over for it sometime around 1997ish (in QLD) and was told then that the rule had been changed. Fortunately I was let off with a warning..........but copped a fine for an expired rego label

I just did the daily trip up the entire length of Norwest Bvd (place is like a car park in peak hour) & there are 5 roundabouts, I did not see one driver indicate when going straight ahead, so I am glad to know I am not the only one

There is good cops out there.. Not that i am a fan of most things they do i have only been fined for doin stuff i shouldnt.. i did have a cop about 8 years ago when on my L`s in sydney near windsor escort me home to blacktown after i dropped my 3 week old zzr250 whilst on my way to wisemans cause i said i couldnt afford a tow. He was a older cop around the 40`s.

logically i can understand the indicate coming out of a roundabout rule. but even as a reasonably competent driver/rider it's not that practical. especially if you've just done a 3/4 or more loop around a roundabout you then have to correct and indicate as your coming out. So in a car, unless I feel like taking it one handed and could quite possibly screw up my exit and hit a gutter (i think its an arseache and more of a risk of the steering wheel slipping if i go one handed, so i'd use the "if practical" excuse, every. single. time.) i'll stick to using two hands on the wheel, which i think is something the rta is/should be encouraging anyhow. As to the bike, christ, i'll do it if i cbf/remember.

I mean, fuckit, i'd rather the grandpas and soccer mums keeping both hands on the wheel and me not come out as im not *sure* they are coming by or exiting than then having slightly less control and knowing they are possibly exiting ( fuck i mean i've lost count of how many times i've followed someone on a highway when they had an indicator on and the last exit was something like 5+ km ago).

Not all cops are bad; it just seems that the one's who are are in the highway patrol....

+ 1......... Even the General Duties Coppers don't like em........

Also what about the cages with self cancelling indicators.... try putting your left indicator on whilst turning slightly right... it keeps wanting to turn off and sounds like it is going to snap off in your hand.........

Bloody valid point you got, many of my cages have had this problem & you are right it sounds like she is going to snap something
