Ventura rack install?

Post by Disco »

Hey thought I'd have a go at putting my rack on myself but had a few drama's  ....Ok more like question's :D ....

Firstly when I put the brackets on they are in the same place as the indicators on the Two Brother's fender eliminator that need's to be used with the can :x .....What I want to know is can I drill holes in the brackets to mount the indicators eg. will it affect the structural integrity at all? If so any suggestions?

An I put everything together loosesly as per instructions and then put the top rack on and tightened everything up but when I took the rack off after it sprung back out about 15-20mm is this normal and acceptable  .....

And do they always give you spare bits and peices

I'll post pic's of both instances below  ......

Oh and pulling apart the back of the bike I found a spiders nest  ....All Baygooooone now :D

the bracket shouldnt spring like that... maybe the rear mounting has changed due to the fender eliminator???

You will find in the instructions that you have to fit the rack to the pick up arms when the bolts are loose then tighten everything up ;)

Dave, all the ventura racks I have installed on my bikes have the brackets spring back a bit when removing the top rack. As long as it is operable I wouldn't be concerned. But if it is difficult to fit and remove the top rack, then you may need to....err....adjust the brackets slightly. I reccomend use of a Suzuki Special tool. Commonly this is referred to as a Mallet! With correct application of the Suzuki Special tool, you can ...err Adjust...the bracket until the rack fits better. I recommend not having it perfectly aligned, as a little spring tension reduces the chance of it slipping off if the locknuts vibrate loose.

As for the indicators, just remember that the steel used in these racks is engineered to "Just" stay together in normal use. I would think a hole the size required to slip an indicator stalk through, may compramise the structure. Here an alternative. These racks are actually just braised together. Take it down to an engineering workshop, or a mate who can weld and do small fabrications and have two mounts braised onto the brackets where required. You will have to repaint or powder coat the brackets again once done. :)

My bad.... a picture tells a thousand words  On my rack I used a long bar to persuade the arms into a more prefrable position ;)

might have to ban you from working on your bike along with Firey. you both should leave your bikes at my place to stop yourselves from destroying them.

ventura racks are designed around stock exhausts and fenders. once they are changed you need to take on a bit of initiative

Yep, they are all designed for the stock set up. My Ventura wouldn't go on with the fender eliminator so I had to cut the blinker lugs off the eliminator and get an integrated brake/blinker set up so i could ditch the blinkers.

Looks like you are about to find out
Dave are you going up a size or down, reason I ask is if the chain does not have alot of adjustment done yet it might not be long enough for a larger sprocket, & possibly not enough adjustment for a smaller one, not saying that it will but just a warning before you jump in ;)

cool you should be fine with that mate & the front size change wont make too much diff on the chain length.
I will be at work in the arvo tomorrow if you want to do both?
No guarantee with the front sprocket but the muther rattle gun should do the trick ;)
