ZX12R Mods

Post by nicko »

Well Ksrc-ians,
im taking the plunge and getting an 04 ZX12R this weekend.
Just wondeirng what mods people would reccomend from some ZX12 owners out there

Exhuast - Been looking at a yoshi slip on - Is the reccomendation? akrapovics site doesnt list one for the 12! Is it worth getting headers etc?
Can anyone reccomend a exhaust reseller thats priced well?

Brake Lines - Is it worth going braided? if so should i just get some off ebay?

Power commanders i hear are well worth it if you have a slip on - what have people paid for these?

Sprockets - is it worth changing teh ratios on the 12?

First things ill be doing is a double bubble screen, led indicators, led tail light!

thanks!
Nicko

mate, stick a pipe on it for some noise, a slip on will do, then ride it!

then maybe get some braided lines. then ride it some more.

when you feel your zx12 is lacking power, then go for the -1 in the front sprocket!

then when flipping it in 2nd is boring... get a PC3 and you can then flip it in 3rd too without clutch :kuda:

:kuda: + 1 .....wattie when ya gettin' a barge mate ??

Nicko.....slip-on is a good mod for noise. You won't need a PCIII with just a slip-on. Only need a PCIII with a full system and a/market air filters. BMC, K&N etc are all good quality. Cheaper in the long run than stock.

Full-system ? Try JC Motors in California (via US ebay). These guys are good to deal with. Avoid Muzzy systems, they have a big hole in the power curve down low (according to sources on ZX12-orf in the US - its a great site )

Braided lines ? Absolutely. HEL lines are good. RatedR parts in WA - Steve gets stuff in the mail quick. Use EBC-HH pads as well....

Get a radiator protector - replacement rad's are farkin' exxy.

Get some light skinz for the headlights......clear 3M adhesive acrylic sheets that are stuck onto the headlight glass......they stop the lenses from breaking from thrown-up stones on the road. Worth every cent !

If you do long miles - consider an Airhawk. These attach to the stock seat and its like having your arse-cheeks kissed by a cloud (don't ask  )

Get your suspension set-up properly right from the word go. Take the bike to a suspension expert to do this.

Dropping 1 tooth on the front is a good idea.....you get better acceleration, and won't notice the slight reduction in top speed.

Remove the secondary butterflies......you may need to get a mechanic to do this. It will give you *instant* response, and immediate arse-puckering acceleration.

Maybe consider a TRE - timing retard eliminator - for full advance in all 4 lower gears.

Throttle insert - gives quicker response.

Thats a good start mate - the bling can wait !!

:kuda:

From a purely looks perspective I'd go for a slip-on over a bolt-on can - the big flange for the bolt-on is pretty ugly IMO.

First of all what the hell is a dino hinge? Is this some sort of hing that helps keep Velocir Raptors away?

Haha, not quite but it can help hide a NOS bottle in ya tail for a nice kickin the ass shot of Hayabuggly killing

Its a well made hinge for the pillion seat. http://kawasakiworld.com/blogs/slykitty ... hinge.html

Yeah as mentioned above, just go easy as with the mods mate, all in good time, one at a time so you get to know what they do etc. Best bang for your buck is the PC3 imo. Just this alone will improve efficiency and power curves, as Gos said, removal of the 2nd butterflies and the front sprocket change. All relatively cheap mods.
Then BMC "road" air filters and either cut the cat and drill through the standard muffler baffles with a series of 1/2 inch holes with a decent map or replace the whole zorst with an akra ti if you want more performance, or just a aftermarket can for bling and noise.

Kleen air removal isn’t recommended for 2004 onwards, they just don’t like it but of course that’s your call.

Anyway, that’s all I can think of for now. 8)

cheers Mate!
That dino hinge looks kinda cool! makes accessing the rear a bit easier!

Is there any easy upgrade to the radials on the 04 12 - have heard a few people whinge about the brakes.

Yeah, some guys mount their PC on the underside of the seat which is neat. Once you move the stock pc and tool tray you have enough room to swing a cat in there.

Brakes. Well if you punt one around the track yeah they will fade but I never had much trouble on the road, Australian standard braided lines help and so does a decent fluid.
From memory I went EBC sintered all round, I even accidently introduced a small air bubble in the rear brake line and it worked good so I left it like that, go figure :? Of course do it at your own risk kind of thing.(I used my rear brake alot so this may differ from other peoples style but it helped stop the rear lighting up too much  .)

One of the blokes on the old zx12 site did a fair amount of track work and said the biggest difference that he made to his brakes was changing the master cylinder using one of a late model gixxer.
