Who can shed some light for me

Post by Gazza »

Just wondering

If you get done for speeding outside of N.S.W, lets say for example "victoria"
do you loose demerit points as well as a fine?
or just pay a fine?

Unfortunately yes. There was even some talk a little while ago them converting to NSW equivalent points eg if it's a 1 point speeding penalty in Vic and a three pointer in NSW then you get Three points.
It's really all about standing around drinking Dave's beer.

Depends. There are two forms for them to fill out. One for the original fine and they will send this one to you, the second one is what they send to the interstate RTA. This will determine if the points are transferred. Sometimes they are feeling nice and/or lazy and don't fill out the second form so you only cop the fine in the mail.

Might be trouble. RTA pen pushes have a lot more spare time then cops...

I got done coming back from MotoGP last year just before crossing the QLD border, and I only got a fine. I don't know how true it is, but a mate of mine who moved to vic from queensland told me he doesn't loose points off his QLD license, he looses them from a "notional" vic one, meaning they give you 12 points to play with, but they can't take your license. I don't know how that would work. Like Mike said though, the road warriors probably don't care for the extra paperwork as much as the desk jockeys, and its probably not worth their time anyway.

the new rule is that u cop the interstate fine amount and then they convert the points to the NSw equivalent...

vic has a fairly high fine but only 1 point for low range speeding... so now u cop the high fine $$$ and then the RTA converts the 1 point to 3 points...

the way i see it, they should keep the whole thing either in your home state or the state in which the offense happens... not mix and match...

I think NSW is the punishment capital of Australia. My step dad had a QLD licence got nabbed in TAS for speeding and had to pay the 110 fine and 0 pts!
