stand by mate, it might be a day or 2 before we get back to you.
Well thaaaaank you very much mate, I'd almost given up hope. I originally thought it would be easy to get half a dozen guys or gals to try this for me. Thanks again Gosling 1. As I explained earlier, you only have to let the bike idle in 1st gear then let the clutch out sharply a few times without taking off but creating the slightest bit (millimeters)of forward momentum to produce the sound.
Peter wrote:I'm just posting this question in the hope someone will try to create this sound on their own bike and let me know if it is normal with some Z1000's. The noise in question has nothing to do with sprockets being loose or the shifter needing re-greasing, chain tension etc etc. So here goes - Do any of you guys with a 2003-2006 Z1000 get a "rattle" if you put the bike in 1st gear, and while it is idling quickly/sharply let out the clutch (almost stalling the bike) then pull the clutch in again before the bike moves forward ?? You have to snap the clutch out quickly and It's not something I go around doing all the time but I noticed the rattle by accident the other day and now it's got me paranoid. I have tried it with one other Z1000 and there was no noise with it. You may have to repeat the above process a couple of times to make it rattle but it is consistantly there on my bike. It is just one quick rattle and I think its just the gearbox/drive train taking up slack but it would be good to know that my bike isn't the only one that does it. Again, it's not a loose chain issue etc, the noise is an internal sound and it does not happen at any other time when riding and changing gears. I would appreciate anyone trying this on their bike and letting me know, thanks in advance.
Mate, on the Z-nine, behind the clutch assembly is a short standard (non-hyvo non-multi-plate) chain that is driven by the starter motor (I think: its been a while), and drives the alternator and the oil pump. This chain has a small slipper tensioner (again, its been a while). This chain will slap under some abnormal conditions such as the one you describe and this may be your internal noise. Adjusting the tensioner or, if worn beyond specs, replacing the chain and tensioner, will cure the matter. Cheers, Woof.......

Thanks Woof, I'll keep that in mind but I would just like to find out whether anyone elses bike does the same thing before I go pulling it apart. If no one on the forum wants to try it for me I might just take a few for a test ride and try it myself.

Yeah, mate, cool. My mate's Ninja-9 had a similar noise to the one you desribe in yours. It was hard to replicate at first, then it got easier with practice. I guess youll just have to ride a few and see what happens. Anyhow, best of luck. Cheers, Woof.......

Thanks for trying ttc, I still don't think it's anything to worry about, probably just a bit of movement in the primary drive but it would be good to know that one other Z does it. I hope the hand is healing up for you.
