OUTRAGE... MOTORCYCLE+PARENTS=KICKED OUT!

Grrr.... I was talking to my dad and motorbikes came up and it started out with "I dont think its a good idea" and slowly progressed to dad setting the condition that if I get a bike I cant live with them while ive got one. Apparently dad doesn't want to be around when i crash and turn myself into a vegetable so if I get this bike I so desperately want I have to move out. I suppose its his way of trying to stop me getting one but thats not gonna happen I want it so bad, everyday I jump on youtube and have a look at someone riding with a headcam and I imagine myself sitting on that seat. Although after much bartering I talked him into letting me back after a year of riding with no accidents. Because next year im going back to uni and I wont be able to have a full time job. so Im gonna pray I nail this job interview on Tuesday and I'm gonna work my ass off to buy the bike asap, move out with my girlfriend, and save as much damn money as I can. Anyone else's parents have a major problem with their parents when they first started riding?

Mate, i think you'll find that any parent that cares about their kids, would have a problem with them getting a bike.
Many parents, with time, just learn to deal with it.

Do you know what I just figured out... I reckon they'll ask me to come home after a week cause they'll get too sick of not knowing if I came home after my last ride or not. I hope... then again moving out could be good!

I reckon if I'd bought a bike at 18 my oldies would have threatened to kick me out too. I think it's a piss-poor approach though - if I had a kid who wanted to ride I'd be more inclined to learn to ride with him/her (assuming I didn't ride) and hope we could ride together and look out for each other (and spend time together).

I hope you do get this job, move out and buy a bike - and when the oldies ask you to come home tell them to get stuffed

I think most parents who make this ultimatum don't actually mean it - my mother apparently didn't. She always threatened to disown me - but never did (dunno if that's good or bad )
If you think yours do then you have to weigh things up for yourself - personally I'd be with Dave and get a job, move out, get the bike, and give them whatever fingered salute you think appropriate.
But I left home as soon as I could - so that has to weigh in to the attitude If you like living with your parents, might be different.

It's a typical parent thing. Although I am a lot older than most of you on here (probably) my mother still worries each time I go out. I have to sms her here and there to let her know how a ride is going. Even today she messaged me to ask if I was going on a ride after our coffee meet up so she knew I was out. I guess most people hear lots about the accidents and that's all that sticks in their minds.

I hope you're able to get the bike, be careful and enjoy.

Looks like I hit the parental jackpot. When I raised the bike idea they didn't mind at all and let me sell the car they gave me to pay for it.

Not that it helps you but i was 22 and had lived out of home for 3 years when i first got the bug, a further year or two later on and i got my first bike. Told both my (divorced) parents after i got the bike. Dad was a bit flustery and showed he wasn't impressed.

Mum was a bit shocked, but built her bridge about it. It took my sister to tell mum that i'm not stupid and that i'd do everything i could to stay out of harms way (without her being prompted to tell mum). Fast forward five or so years on and she doesn't mind that i ride, she'd not get on the back, but has told me that she is proud that i did what i set out to achieve and got what i wanted despite what other people thought.

Dad, now? he still puts the occasional snippy comment in, but knows well enough to leave enough alone.

Yeah see my parents aret quite the same... instead of being proud that i stuck to my guns and got a bike they're gonna say you should get rid of that thing before its too late, you were lucky so far but you might not be tomorrow, and they'll keep saying it till the end of days every time the motorcycle topic is brought up. But my solution I'm gonna get this job no matter what it takes, save some cash and move out/buy the bike. and hopefully if I can juggle job/uni I'll never have to go back! hahahaha mum actually threatened me before saying that if i bring a bike home she's gonna wait till i go out, pack my stuff, leave it outside and change the locks. but im pretty sure she's bi-polar, no one admits it but they know! psycho banshee!

That's a difficult one mate if I want to be honest and there is no right or wrong answer.
No-one wants their kids to end up as statistics.
Having said that I hope my kids are always going to have good physical as well as mental health and going to enjoy life. To me that means to have less "having to"s and more of being able to live for their passions, whatever they may be.

Yeah i know what you mean I'd be uneasy about it but if they really really wanted to as much as I want to ride, id have to roll over... although in retrospect this is much more dangerous than riding motorbikes.

My son rides. My wife (CBR600F) and I (GPz1100) realised that at 18 he's legally an adult, so we asked for 6 months on Ps in a car without screwing up; then we'd help with the bike, but we'd expect him to ride with us for the first few rides. Basically he did his 3 months on Ls, riding with us (great excuse for me to get out with him at every opportunity, and the trip to Adelaide and back on the GOR racked up a few Ks). Now he's on his Ps, and rides to Uni every day. And we worry about him, and ask him to SMS when he gets to Uni. So I can see it from both sides. At least your parents will know, rather than hiding the bike around the corner. Good luck, and try to remember that statistically you will be in the most dangerous demographic on the roads.

We spent this morning at the wreckers, getting bits for the son's FZR250. Go up to your nearest wrecker, and have a look at all the 250s with L plates. You'll understand your parents' concerns.

Ah tes, had the same prblem 28 years ago. Came home with a picture of an XR250 and mum told me to take it down, because "you will never have a motorbike as long as you live in this house"

In the end I got the bike when I could afford one (6-7 years later) and left it at my mates place for 4 months - then they decided to move out

Told mum I had the bike - they were moving out - what do I do ?
