Help a fellow rider out

Post by Nelso »

Remember the recent road rule changes that came in last year? There was one that made 8 year old the minimum age that a pillion could be. Madkaw put the link up iirc. One of the rule changes included animals not being allowed to travel on the tank of a motorbike.

This lady lost her arm a while ago and has a assistance dog that rides on the tank with her and her husband. They travel around Australia on their bike raising money for charity. Regardless of the fact the dog is an assistance dog and the bike is their only mode of transport it is still illegal for the dog to travel on the tank and they cannot get an exemption.

Here is the link for the protest. http://www.gopetition.com.au/petitions/ ... -ride.html They will also be organising a protest ride at some point. It's not just a protest for these individuals, but a get it up ya to the idiots that have never ridden that bring these unsubstantiated rules in with out consultation with the people they will effect.

Im not signing it..... Its stupid to put young children and dogs on motorcycles. Sure its a heartfelt story, and its cute.... but at the end of the day I say NO to animals on bikes.

I say let the people concerned make their own decision, carryout their own risk assesment and proceed accordingly. I have been taking my now 8 year old daughter on the back of my bike and she loves it, I also ride accordingly when doing so.

Tex and his dogs are an institution.

I am not a fan of over regulation by Gumbyment Departments

They've done over 150,000km with this dog on the tank. I think by now they would have an idea whether it is safe or not. This is not a protest to let everyone ride around with whatever they want on their tank, they just can't get an exemption for their situation because of bureaucracy.

Another interesting fact is that it is ok for anyone to have a dog behind them on the pillion seat, they are just not allowed on the tank.

No, I was on a ride with them the other weekend but didn't get a chance to meet them due to not quite making it to the destination and the detour to the hospital that followed.

And obviously the problem with that is that dogs don't have thumbs.

I have known Tex for a number of years and have met Jen on numerous occasions also, both are good people.
KSRC have had 2 dyno days with them and I think we all enjoyed it.
Not sure why they have not informed us of the partition as I know they would get support here.
I believe in personal choice so will support it... (assistant dog or not.?)
They have done a lot for charity and for motorcycling...

Taking a dog on your bike is not something I believe everyone should do, in fact very few should do it, but I believe Tex, Bundy and Jen (who is a dog trainer) have shown the ability to do it safely, over a very long period of time..

Absolutely. All of my kids have been taken for rides on bikes since they were little, even punted around on the tank in the street at a suitable speed.

I don't see the difference between a dog on a bike or a dog in a car without a seatbelt or a dog on the back of a ute.

I think we've had enough of do gooders trying to save ourselves from ourselves
