I sold my 9 for that reason. I now have a ZRX which as those who own them know, is the perfect motorcycle!!!! :kuda:

I think my main concern was leaning/hunching over for a certain period of time as i cant afford to make my back worse off than it is now, thanks Cwidova and MadKaw
Stay away from Ducatis and small bullet-like Sports bikes like the ZX-10R or the GSXR1000/R1/CBR1000RRRrrrrr and you'll be fine.

Seriously if you really want to ride (and I mean really) you'll find something. Depending on how stuffed your back is the ZZR600 would be ok, and I'm guessing unless you're a midget short-arse like myself the ZZR1100 and 1200 will be fine too...but they are all a bit of a weight to wheel around (even the 600).

If your back is too stuffed for those then look at the nakeds, Kawasaki make a couple of beauties, the Z1000 and Z750, but there is also an old-school big-bore retro-looking naked called the ZRX1200R and a smaller Transformer-looking 650c twin called the Er6N (and F for a faired version). All the Japanese manufacturers have their equivalents, it may be a matter of throwing a leg over in the showroom and trying one on for size (yes, I ended up with a Hornet :? ). Don't discount the mid and large sized Triumphs, they look the goods.

If these still cause pain then you could look at a Jap or (horrors) Yank cruiser or something hi-tech (and supremely ugly) as the Honda DN-01. These put you in a 'sit up and beg' sitting position. If these are no good, maybe a power scooter like the Burgman or even a trike.

As I said earlier though sometimes the will to ride outweighs everything else and you'll find yourself on two wheels.

Enjoy and let us know how you get on.

Well i am surprised a ZX 9 gave ya a sore back  So does that mean when my back gets sore i am OLD :P :P :P .But seriously i get back pain when i take the old z 900 out and the seating position on that is pretty good, maybe its the way ya gotta work it to go around corners and its hefty weight.

My Ducati used to kill my Back on the long rides, actually not so much my back but the muscle between the Shoulder blades, oh and my wrists, it would have been ok if the Cops let me do 200+ everywhere but they don't seem to care about my comfort!
Now I have the KTM it's HEAPS better! no back or wrist discomfort at all! get an upright seating position and it will all be good! Stay away from Sports bikes and try and get a really LONG test ride on a sports tourer (anything you have to lean forward on)
Get a Kawasaki Versys! (I want to have a go one one!)

My G/F used to get Carpal Tunnel and would lose feeling in her hand on the bike, she has had the operation and is now as good as gold! I wonder if a throttle rocker would help?

It's like the Lane Cove Tunnel or the M5 Tunnel but it goes from Blacktown to Carpal in Rooty hill! :kuda:

it's in your wrists and takes all nerves and shit to your hand, it can get tight in there and causes numbness, they can operate on it which is keyhole surgery and they slice the tunnel open (I think) which then allows the previously mentioned tendons and shit to move around without being constricted so stops the numbness ... and NO I'm not a Doctor!

I did my back pretty bad years ago, just before I was heading off for my first ride from Canberra to Phillip Island on my old ZX9R. The only time I was comfortable was when I was actually on the bike, it was the getting on and off that had me stuffed.

as far as the numb fingers goes, I've heard that heavier bar ends can do the trick, the vibration through the bars can cause a bit of numbness, and changing the weight can help to stop that vibration
