Things happen fast in my world!
What a rush.
After slowly walking my bike around the backyard/patio, and sitting on it as I've been fixing it for 2 weeks, on friday after being put through its paces and passing with flying colours my dad said "wanna have a go?" "yeah, why the heck not"
My backyard's pretty big so after a couple of laps of "throttle-clutch then clutch-break" it was 4 meters of balanced riding until the gate. that was my first ever ride on a bike.
For the record, no ego here, I actually dropped my bike BEFORE I ever rode it. I must have put it up and down on the centre stand about 20 times, then just as I finish repairing it, I just let the weight get away from me and that was that, it went over, I landed on top. We pulled it back up, no scratches. Already love having a naked bike, especially a heavy (for me) 500.
For learners, I fully recommend buying a bike which has already been dropped and is marked. I would have been so much more pissed if I had have made those little scratches on the bar-ends and brake lever. )

I didn't drop my first and I had her for 16 months. She was a brand-spankers GPX250R that was light enough to hold up one handed when chock-full of adrenalinDISCO wrote:I dropped my first bike Tim its a right of passage I think....Anyone who said they han't are more than likely full of shit

Alas dropped my second quite a few times, an older second-hand already-scratched ZZR600 that was shitloads heavier

Mick I had a little chuckle when I read you tried to ride off with the disc lock still on.

Re: MY record so far, 4 meters down the side of my house in 1st
I've just eclipsed my measly 4meters with a shocking 1km around my back yard, up the side of the house driveway, around the front yard and back again.
I even got both feet up on the pegs for one whole lap. Had to stop then, felt like I was getting cocky.
Haven't touched the rear brake yet tho, and that throttle keeps getting scary blips from my right hand when i don't mean to.
All in all, a fun and successful 2nd ride. The bike riders next door out the front must have got some amusement.

Bloody disc locks.... They were all the rage years ago and i too got caught out with one, jumped on the bike after work in a hurry to get outa the place
Bent the carrier and couldnt be fixed, ended up buy to new discs... awch!
Never had a bloody disc lock since.

you must eat your weetbix, I routinely carry and pack 25kg boxes and pallets etc at work, and I never considered I needed to do some weight training until I started pushing this thing around
You really gotta show em who's boss hey, all about "momentum"

Re: Now my record is 1km riding between front and backyards!
I've done one day of the learner training course at St Ives now, have the rest this afternoon.
Getting the "LOOK WHERE YOU WANT TO GO" thing down pretty well. Looking at the middle of the corner, then following my eyes up to the exit of the corner, then to the entry of the next. Got that principal from "sport riding techniques"
Learning A LOT!
On the "round the house side" I'm getting pretty fluent at riding around the back, down the side and round the front, in both directions front and back.
Yesterday we got into 2nd gear and went 'round and 'round.
Today, we go into braking, roadcraft etc.
