How many points have you lost? (re-vote)

Post by Cath »

Given several recent suspensions, I was wondering how many points people have lost on their licence :?
Hopefully we're not ALL on the verge of joining team suspended...

So: if you haven't lost any points, pick '0'
If you've lost all of them and are not supposed to be riding, pick '12'

Edited to clarify
I think half of us were answering one way and half the other way - please vote again!
And thanks to the kindly admin who cleared the results for me - is a blowy still the going rate for admin favours???

All these suspensions had me thinking as well so I jumped on to the RTA website to check mine, I have had 2 fines over the past 4 years, being in Oct 2005 and March 2006,(both 3 point offenses), so I thought I would be on 3 points, not so it would seem as according to the RTA website I'm on 6 still.
I looked into it a bit further and found this.....
Demerit points and licence suspensions
The law requires the RTA to send a notice of suspension to a licence holder who has incurred 12 or more demerit points in any three-year period.

The law permits the counting of demerit points for offences of any age but suspension can only be applied if the dates the offences were committed are within 3 years of each other.

However, the RTA considers it would be unreasonable to consider offences more than 40 months. The 40-month period exists to ensure that delays between an infringement taking place and the RTA being notified of the infringement are taken into account and ensures that only recent and relevant offences are counted.

For this reason, demerit points up to 40 months old are displayed on the RTA’s online demerit point enquiry screen, because these offences have the potential to count towards a demerit point licence suspension.

Demerit points used towards a licence suspension can’t be counted towards future licence suspensions.

Note: Offences and the relevant number of demerit points remain on a person’s driving record irrespective of the age of the offence. If you obtain a copy of your driving record, all your offences and demerit points will be displayed because this accurately reflects your driving history.
So if it's 40 months thats 3 years & 4 months, NOT the 3 years that everyone seems to think it is, am I reading that correct?

I've still got 11 spare ones up my sleeve, although I don't really want to play with them, it's the fines more than the points I don't like.

For reference I got a 45+ bust in 1992 (I think) in the airport tunnel :(. $500something, and they said I had 21 days to pay and then another 21 after the courtesy letter. It was six points then which put me to 12 and so it was 6 months or 3 then probation which I took, then went to court right near the end of my probation to save me from another riding holiday.

Those were the days... :kuda: :kuda: :kuda:

I've got 9 - so one more fine of any sort for me and I'm done.
3 years for getting them back has been consistent I've found - it might take a while for the site to update though. I hadn't heard that 40 month thing until now.
I should get some of mine back in April - 3yr anniversary of the Putty BBQ

Am I misreading Caths post ? Do you want how many demerit points we have or how many left from the 12 ? It makes the poll look completely different if we get it wrong. :)

I heard that you couldn't actually get done for speeding by regular police in the airport tunnel as it was out of their juristiction. Apparently because it runs under the airport it comes under the federal police. Obviously this is just another one of those urban myths that goes around

I have 0 demerit points, i thought i'd gained 4 but a check on RTA website says i have 0 :D

Russ it means that instead of going for a ride or drive over a DD break and thinking you have a couple of points up your sleave and not worring too much about it, it suddenly becomes a case of staying the fuck off the roads all togeather, just in case you have a brain fade or come across an over zealus cop who hasn't made quata for the day and pings you for 3 kms over, and losing my lic for 3 months

The sooner that they bring back the old system of demrit points the better, having a lower point penalty for the lower speeding offences is a much better way of going about it, I mean I can't imagine the number of people who are going to lose their lic over the DD weekend for what is a minor speeding offence (under 10kph). Esp if you live in Victoria, I'm supprised anyone still drives down there. ;)

You have that right. I think I still have the infringement notice at home somewhere.

It was 2.30am or something stupid like that, lucky they weren't on South Dowling Street as I was going faster and it's a 70 zone (this was before all the tunnel shenanigans started). I had just finished the nice sweeping lefts and rights on the overpasses coming home from town and by the time I was half way through the tunnel I saw the headlights come on, they were on the median strip facing back up the tunnel, so by the time I got to the car I was pretty much already stopped and getting off the bike.

One of the nice men attending had the sexy bike cop pants on, and kindly told me that my bike was probably capable of much more, my best was 157 but the radar locked at 143, probably saved me from a manner dangerous conviction as I've heard that's what it would have been at more than 60 over.
