Is govt realising they've pushed the friendship?

Post by mike-s »

link1(Victoria)
Victorian oads Minister Tim Pallas has dismissed calls to cut car speeds across Melbourne that proponents say will improve road safety for pedestrians and cyclists.
Theres hope for us after all. Personally a better idea is to encourage people to LOOK when walking on/near roads and also when driving, you know, what you should already be doing?

link2(NSW)
MOTORISTS who commit minor speeding offences will be treated more leniently after the Roads Minister, Michael Daley, announced he would relax penalties and overhaul the demerit points system.
Then again with a new roads minister, there's hope that promise of a review actually leads to improvements...... Then again no specifics were given and its a bit of a "i intend to do ..." so we'll see what happens.

just found both these gems today while perousing the news.

the demerit points system should only be used for traffic offences that warrant it. Fines are enough of a deterrent for 95% of the population, without the *double jeopardy* of points as well......

Maybe someone in the govt. has woken up and smelled the roses ??

In NSW the present system encourages you to speed i reckon. ie you get 3 points for 0-15 and 3 points for 15-30. My theory is always well if I'm gonna do 3 points i might as well be doing 30k's over. So if i am over the limit I always make sure i'm 30 over. If you did 1 point for 0-15 then I'd probably only do 15 over.

But yeah Gos is right on the overall points scheme, its stupid. You lose three points for driving/riding in a Transit lane or making an illegal right turn where a fine would do the trick just as well
