I feel for this kids Mother. First her husband, now the son.

However, this is what can happen when you combine youthful exuberance and speed. The photo doesn't really show it, but the B pillar and rear door are pushed in a bloody long way!!

I highly recommend you buy a 10 and allow the darwinian theory to be the deciding factor!!!

I've just read this whole thread, and as far as I can tell - you've pretty much made up your mind which bike to buy; and are just looking for some justification.

Couldn't agree more.
The main reason my first bike was an old GPz750 was that it gave me a chance to learn the weight and throttle responce of a *real* bike, then stepped up to a nice low-down torquey XJR1200, and now my new ZZR12.
Small steps; remember - the faster you try and run, the quicker you'll trip and plow into a wall.

AN ON RAMP!!!!

And a CBR1000RR is a much more rideable bike, less grunt too.
oh yeaaaa.. ur friend did it so when i get a litre bike im gona obviously crash it like ur friend. Yhe ur advice is so good man, everyone who hops on a litre bike crashes instantly..becuase everyone is the same!!!!

:? :?
This is typical of the kind of idiots who go straight to big bikes.

Ask the question about upgrading because they KNOW they shouldn't be doing such a big step... hoping that some people will say it is OK and then they will have a crack at people who tell them it's a bad idea.

You ask, we tell.... a 600 first, definitely.

I went:

250cc - 30hp, 140kg
600cc - 80hp, 180kg
900cc - 115hp, 240kg
1000cc - 115hp, 195kg
1200cc - 200hp, 215kg

Unless you can ride the arse off a 250 (ie. cornering and braking, not wanting more acceleration!) you shouldn't even be going onto a 600... and 1000cc is just asking for trouble. There are so many factors aside from alleged self-control (which we all claim to have, but in reality everyone plays up a little now and then). The fact that they are insanely fast when you give them a handful is just one thing... the fact that they can wheelspin, wheelstand, headshake, etc all when you're just meaning to accelerate a bit, accidental wheelies due to the wrong choice of gear or more throttle than you intended, ending up on the wrong side of the road as you've target fixed or hit a little bump and opened the throttle, or simply misjudging the amount of effort you have to put in to stop or turn a heavier bike from reasonable speed.... all considerations.

I don't by any means aim to bignote myself by the type of bike I ride, because I probably don't ride it at much more han 6/10ths of its ability, but before going to something silly you need to learn genuine respect for the weight, power and brakes your bike has... and jumping from an idiot-friendly 250 to a full-tilt race weapon doesn't teach you that. I've had my current bike since the start of the year and I still wonder if I really NEED a bike like this apart from wanting the latest & greatest etc etc

Owning an inbetween class stops riders from becoming "point and shoot" riders....

Point and shoot is when you have enough power not to HAVE to go fast through corners, so you end up making up the speed on the straight bits.... It is the reason why a lot of 1L bike riders are completely shit at riding.... I had a 600 for years and have passed more 1000cc bikes than you can imagine, simply because I cornered better (because I wanted to keep up, I had to carry more speed in corners).

I am not saying that having a 600 or a 1000cc bike next is going to stop you learning that... but most people dont bother/need to learn it because they have so much power...

Personally I would highly recommend going with a 600 first... Once you can pass the thousands in the corners you are ready to move up... Just my humble opinion, dont bite my head off if you dont like it hehehe

Point and shoot has its place. Depending on the type of bike you are riding. However, I fully agree.

I have a saying for riders like that. I say they are doing the "Russian Shit". That is, they're rushin' down the straight bits, get to the corner and go "Shiiiiiiiiiit!!!! "

Get a 600, fast enough to lose ur licence on any road, still does 100kph in 1st gear, out corners any 1000, cheaper on insurance and better on tyres and fuel.

1000cc bikes are just for guys compensating for some.... oh wait I have a 1000 - scratch that last bit

PS I did 100,000+km on 600s in Australia, and England before I got a 1000c. And after 2 years and 16000km I still haven't mastered the 1000 to the extent that I'd like.

After reading the other post by this guy, all i can say is "I smell a troll"

Good to see he has decided to take our advice from the other thread, and at least wait untill he has a full licence before upgrading.

Im still on my Ls, so i cant really comment on this, but i know all about the over confidence that new riders get, I have found myself in some pretty sketchy situations on my gpx250 because i caught myself thinking, this is easy, i can handle that corner at this speed, followed very quickly by "oooooohhhh shiiitttt!!!!!" learn how to ride your current bike before you go anywhere near something different.

Too many people make the mistake of over trusting their abilities, when you find yourself coming out of a corner screaming at your bike to hurry up and get the power down, then your ready for a 600 IMHO.

My insurance for both the new 6r and 10r is through the roof! I mean its not stopping me buying either one of them. Im 17 years olf at the moment. But i turn 18 october 10th next year and thats when ill be picking my new bike up roughly. InsureMyRide said on the new 09 zx6r they will insure me full comprehensive for 4grand a year. I mean its alot but in 1years time it comes down by 800$ and so on.... . And i think use will like to hear iv decided to go to a 600 not 1000 :) And keep the 600 untill im at least 21 or more then get a 1000 or something if i feel the need  But because im going to be insured my InsureMyRide this year and next, so by the time i get the 6r it will be around 3000 which is still verrry steep but for my age and the power of it he said its the only way to go. So obviously i have to pay it. For a 10r its 5000 grand but by the time ( if i was to get one, which im not) it would be around 3900 :(. I was wondering was any of you guys riding new 600's or 1000's at 18>19??? I surely cant be the only one :? Loads of people i know in American start on 600's and even 1000's!!!

but lots of things happen in america....

frm the couple of forums im on i knwo of nobody who is my age (21) on a 2006 or upwards 600 or 1000s

closest i know would be me on a 2001 600 or a guy who used to have a 05(ish) Z750... there is a member here (sneakybiker) on a Z1000 but she's at lteast my age i believe...

two reasons why its rare.... 1stly - money, 2ndly - people knowing their limits...

My insurance for both the new 6r and 10r is through the roof!

There's a reason for that! They know there's a good chance that they'll be paying up BIG.
I mean its not stopping me buying either one of them.

That's fiscally irresponsible when an older 600 has plenty of grunt and handles better than you could ride.
Im 17 years olf at the moment. But i turn 18 october 10th next year and thats when ill be picking my new bike up roughly.
Which means that you haven't got either the riding experience OR the life experience and probably (from your posts) haven't got an appropriate attitude to be riding a big bike.
InsureMyRide said on the new 09 zx6r they will insure me full comprehensive for 4grand a year. I mean its alot but in 1years time it comes down by 800$ and so on.... .
Hope you've got rich parents.
And i think use will like to hear iv decided to go to a 600 not 1000 :) And keep the 600 untill im at least 21 or more then get a 1000 or something if i feel the need
That's slightly more sane. But only slightly. A new 600 isn't exactly tame either.
But because im going to be insured my InsureMyRide this year and next, so by the time i get the 6r it will be around 3000 which is still verrry steep but for my age and the power of it he said its the only way to go. So obviously i have to pay it. For a 10r its 5000 grand but by the time ( if i was to get one, which im not) it would be around 3900 :(.
You are actually considering paying that?? The 600 price is at least half way to the cost of a decent second hand bike.
I was wondering was any of you guys riding new 600's or 1000's at 18>19??? I surely cant be the only one :? Loads of people i know in American start on 600's and even 1000's!!!
The only people I know who are riding that young are on 250s. You're certainly not the only one thinking about bigger bikes, though.

If an American decided to walk off a cliff would that make it a good idea?

You don't need a new 600 or 1000cc bike to do what you say you want to do. In my opinion, getting either would be a mistake. It's not just because you're young, either. I said pretty much EXACTLY the same thing to my older brother about a year ago. He's still pretty happy on a 250 at the moment (has his open licence).

Well i have my mind set on the new 09 zx6r and Paul the manager at Boltons Kawasaki here in Adelaide, suggested the 6r as a good next step in learning to be a better rider and getting welcomed in the super sport range which is where i want to be ( I love these bikes!!) Also is it possible to get insured under a family members name who rides motorbikes and has his full licence and put both our names down as riding the 6r ( for eg have his name down for riding it 80% and mine for riding 20%) that way my insurance will be heaaaaaps cheaper right? And keep doing this untill im at least 20 and by then the insurance will be very little especially since ill be still on a 09 6r and there will be other models out making my bike cost go down makin my insurance go down. I know you can do that on cars, my mums Chrysler 300c has my sister down as they driver and shes 20. And there v8 hemi's.
