what everyone has said above is totally correct but they are not personal insults against you so dont take them that way!!!
What you need to keep im mind are these key points;
- the 6 is lighter and easier to control
- the 6 is more forgiving and less full on to ride therefore wears you out less
- the 6 will forgive you WHEN you make a mistake (and you will) where a 10r will not (we all make mistakes and you do not have that much experience to identify them before they happen)
the 6 will allow you to learn more quickly and you will become quicker on a 6 faster than a 10 puely from the easy riding factor.

I'd probably go for the 600. Once you get the hang of that and when/if (highly doubtful) you ever get bored with it then you have something else to step up to down the track. Just my opinion tho so please don't shoot!!

the 10R & 6R aint to much difference between them just that the 600 takes more effort & a few more revs to get there but if you went the 10R take it easy till your used of the power

the new ZX10R are quite savage beasts! The 04/05 is a raw, no BS, no more fucking around machine, the 06/07 i found had way to much top end power and i felt like my arms were gunna get ripped out of there sockets and the 08 was a mix of the 2!

Big bike? Pfft I have more fun on a 400 than my 10, there is something really good about when the riders ability far ought weighs the bikes ability

I have had a swag of big bikes & really they are overrated especially on the road where there is more chance of twisting the throttle too much & getting in trouble by either crashing or possibly loosing your licence for 12 months

Yeh i get it, as someone else said they fell off a 250 for twisting the throttle. It depends on the person and ther mind. Its you in control of the throttle so everything from ther onwards is in your hands. So no more "my mate fell of a litre going up a hill.. YES A HILL.

My anecdote about the CBR1000RR riding workmate was just a point of reference, the guy was a tool and he was pretty quick to tell me he could handle a 1000cc bike, and that was after he told me he would never have picked me for a bloke thats into bikes let alone races them. Evidently he had no skills.
I like litre bikes for their torque, any gear any revs they just go, I'd be hard pressed to go back to something smaller for road use.
Your not the first person to post up on a bike forum wanting to go to a litre from your 250cc and predictably sensible advice abounds.
Many riders have lost friends to motorcycle fatalities and would advise a stepped graduation to litre bike ownership given the extra temptations they present.
Giving someone off their P plates a 10 is like giving them the keys to a 550 hp Porsche 911 GT2, sooner or later it'll put the uninitiated into a culvet or a wall, but a 10 doesn't have the luxury of ABS, stability control or airbags so its splat no second chances for the new rider. But in saying that a 6 really isn't much better at the pointy end of its capabilities.
But that is part of the thrill isn't it?
But worse yet a new rider could get the litre and realise they were in over their head and ride it like a big girls blouse forever showing an inch of pussy shine on the rear tyre and and a flat spot in the middle from all the motorway use it gets on the weekends (another work reference, a far more sensible CBR1000RR owner

Some of the most satisfying riding you can do is when you can put a bike through its paces knowing it wont bite you if you get on the throttle too abruptly exiting a turn, I've had just two trackday sessions on my wifes clapped out 400 and it was a hoot because i could spank it relentlessly without fear of the dreaded highside. That and passing the same riders on litre bikes around the outside repeatedly till they just give up and let me go on the next straight.

don't know where you are but if you are in vic you can do the intermediate training course with hart on a 600 to get a feel for them. then decide if you want to stick with the 600 or go up. its worth doing this before you upgrade anyway just to be comfortable on a bigger bike. (and its their bike if you drop it

Mostly freeways, a little city every now and then (not much), but mostly open freeway roads as the 6r or 10r will be my weekend bike so to speak and my trail bike or 250r 09 Ninja as my going to work bike. So pretty much i go to work in my 250 ( which isnt even 5km away
) then the 6r or 10r (whatever i decide) as my joy ride bike, going to the shops, going out to the malls, going to the city to see whats going on, crusing with my mates in there cars, and bikes. So yeh, everything but work. I have been thinking anyway, arnt zx10r's speed restricted here anyway? Thats what my kawasaki delear said. They can go 290km but thats all, (unless u take it off) but who wants to go that speed anyway? I just want a quick accelerating bike that can also go fast and from the specs i see the 6r can do 0-100km in 3secs and 10r is pretty much the same
So why is the 10r so much worst so to speak? And the 6r can still reach 270+ depending on mods, but once again i wont even take her past 200 but i just love the power, and if i get a good deal and the 10r is similar to the 6r in price thn why not im saying?? Also one day ill be into track days but for no im not. I dont even no if there is a track in Adelaide? But looks fun and i will definatly one day. And as for how long iwll i keep my 6r/10r for? I plan on keeping one of them for at least 3year if not more, or even keep it. Get my moneys worth and maybe upgrade to another model but most probably end up keeping the bike and by 3years or so time if i want to upgrade ill have the cash anyway so no need for a trade.

well if u want a posing bike get the 10... u do have a track in adelaide... mallala...if u only do open roads and occasional twisties get the 6... it will be more than u can handle and as u say, u wont go over 200 so why get a 10?? and it wont even blow a 6 away to 100... so all i can see going for the 10 is that fact that it seems cooler to rider a litre bike than a 600... so if in your mind the 10 is "cooler" and will impress your cruising mates more, then buy a 10... if u wanna have more fun and be safer... then get a 6...
main question is why do u want a quick accelerating bike anyway??? to look cool with your cruising mates??? sounds like the poor bike wont ever get over 140... u gotta go to the track to do quick riding safely...
i know from experience it can be exciting to think about riding a 600 or 1000 bike when ur a noob and you think to yourself... sure i'll be safe, i'll never give it a handful of throttle, i will never go over the speed limit... but u always do...
i did on my 250 and ive overcooked it before in tight stuff... and only got out of it because i wasnt going extremely quick (see lack of power and acceleration) and because the bike is light and handles well... pure and simple... i know if i did it again on my new bike, i'd be in a ditch out the back of wollombi...
but then again if its only for cruising then suppose it will never see any good roads...
like i say, learn to ride the wheels off your 250 before u step up...

A mate of mine over here swears by the same motif as you "papa" and next weekend is taking delivery of an 06 ZX12!!
His experience is limited to 3 weeks approx on a clapped out RGV250 , Perhaps 4000 odd MOSTLY STRAIGHT km on a CBR600-F4 (illegally) and now thinks a 12 is well within his ability as all he has to do is control the amount of throttle!? He is about to undergo his open class licence test this week!!
Bear in mind I have ridden with this guy on a number of occasions and to be honest his skills just plain are not quite there!!! He knows how to do wheelies / burnouts and stoppies etc but struggles in corners terribly. Good rider??? definitely NOT!!! Adequate skills for a 12 at speed ??? NOT LIKELY
Point is that for those of us who are still around and have seen and heard all of this kinda thing many times before , it is not about doubting you so much as friendly advise from people who have been around some VERY fast bikes a VERY LONG time! There is no point in buying a litre bike - scaring the shit out of yourself then parking it or selling it!?
"Varden's comments above sum it up quite well , ie if it's street cred you are after , come round a litre bike on a 600 or smaller!!! = INSTANT RESPECT!!!!!





'Papa' this is another side of riding that many newby riders young and old just don't get . Apart from all the sensible advice you have recieved , nothing looks more rediculous than a blinged up litre bike in the hands of a novice "very obvious usually" Nothing is more aggravating than a novice who has learned a few tricks and is passionately in love with their right wrist!!!!!

Ultimately though you gotta go with your own instincts dude.
