BATHURST will be urged to capitalise on the euphoria of the new Premier Nathan Rees throwing government money at the promotion of V8 Supercar racing.
Member for Bathurst Gerard Martin was yesterday moving to have Bathurst Regional Council expedite a submission to the Department of State Development for help to build a second race track at Mount Panorama.
Mr Martin said it was obvious Mr Rees’ announcement this week of $30 million to stage a V8 race at Homebush Bay over the next five years was a commitment to Supercars which were a major attraction at the Mount.
Bathurst mayor Paul Toole said an invitation has already been extended to Mr Rees to attend the Bathurst 1000 on Sunday, October 12.
“I’ve extended a personal invitation to Mr Rees who I’ve previously met to discuss water issues and look forward to meeting him again to discuss Mount Panorama and V8 racing,” Cr Toole said.
“We discussed having a second track with Morris Iemma and he was confident the State could support two more major forms of motor sports in NSW.
“Council engineers are doing as asked to prepare a costing, determine the size and location of a International Moto GP circuit for Bathurst.
“We’d hope to be in a position to put something on the table in a discussion with Mr Rees before the next mini budget.”
While Mr Martin earlier said the injection of millions of dollars in Sydney could be better spent in Bathurst, he was yesterday thinking it might be a smart investment that could have benefits for Bathurst.
Mr Martin said it would have to be seen what funding might be announced in the November 11 mini budget. However he would be working ahead of the budget with Bathurst council on the submission, as well as capitalising on the commitment made by Mr Rees to V8s. Mr Martin said assurances had been written into contractual arrangements for Homebush Bay V8s to ensure they in no way detract from Bathurst.
He said the signing-off on Sydney’s end-of-season V8s was “as good as done”.

Re: Moto GP - At Bathurst..??
They have been trying to plan this track for a little while now i think. I say bring it on! The more excuses i have to go camping in Bathurst and wake up to the sounds and smells of motor racing, the better!!

This beer is making me AWESOME!

Mmmmm, 2 Aussie GP's. Wouldn't that be nice. I won't hold my breath though. The GP should always belong to PI.
Most motorcycle problems are caused by the nut that connects the handlebars to the saddle.

Re: Moto GP - At Bathurst..??
Bathurst is a great car track but the worst bike track...no way, create a new track, keep Oran park fix EC, when will the government and local councils get together and realize Australia has such great talent in motor sport and we need to develop it not take away from it.
Built by craftsman, Designed by a genius, Ridden by a twat....
Re: Moto GP - At Bathurst..??
MotoGP will NEVER go to bathurst, there are just too many walls and very small runoffs, there is no way the track could ever be built to spec to the standard that is required to host the event
