Motorcycle Awareness Week started here in the ACT this weekend.........and yes, I was aware of a number of motorcycles in the 4th which needed my close and undivided awareness !!!

So I had a nudge at a couple of bikes and that other bloody 4-wheeled contraption..........
Did a number on the buggy this weekend - got it fired up. Still have to complete a modification to the gear-linkage mechanism that is currently fitted, and get the brake working - but I expect within the next month, there should be some YouTube footage floating about of this thing fully sideways !!

The 6fiddy hasn't been ridden since it ran out of rego back in May. It had developed some carbie issues.... so a big thanks to ProblemChild for the lend of his compressor over the weekend - this allowed me to do a number on the 34mm CV's fitted to the 6fiddy. They had been playing up a bit, idle was strange, and there was an air-leak *somewhere*.....so I gave them all a tear-down, good clean out with carbie cleaner and the air-duster. There was a bit of crap in the fuel passages, and a few other spots......cleaning out carbies with a good-quality pressurised solvent and air pressure is *the only way to go*...
The carby manifold boots were also removed, and re-fitted with some #3 sealant. This was to try and remove any issues with air-leaks from this area...
I also finally did the 'WiredGeorge' modification to the ignition coils. On these older bikes, the +12v feed to the coils goes through a number of connections between the ignition barrel before it reaches the coils. By the time it does, the voltage is often down to only 9 or 10 volts, due to resistance in the old wiring and connections. This can result in poor starting - which was one of the symptoms this bike had.
This mod (already done by Mick C on the Silver Surfer) is just a relay that is triggered by the voltage signal from the kill-switch, and supplies a clean, consistent +12V directly to the positive side of each coil. Its a pretty easy modification - but one with a very noticeable impact...
The end result ? - The bike starts almost instantly, and idles like it did on the showroom floor in 1980 !! well......almost. - It does need a carbie balance, but the overall result was fantastic. No more 'hanging' above idle when you give it a rev, very stable idle, and great response when riding.

Last but not least - I also gave the 750MX a decent nudge, and am happy to report that it too, is up and running. This bike had serious issues with starting, due to the inlet valves all 'closing up', and no clearance at all....must be all the revs out up Mt Coree eh ?? The clearances have all been done, bunged in some fresh juice and gave the battery a mighty charge...........tidied up some shitty ignition wiring (still have to do that WiredGeorge coil mod though) - and late this afternoon it finally coughed into life as well !! It has also had a change of muffler, and now really does sound like a road bike, so it should sound pretty good up in the bush over the next few months....

So very happy with a productive weekend that saw a z650-engined buggy start for the first time in 5+ years, the 6fiddy is now running really sweet, and the 750MX'er will be howling along the local fire trails very soon.
Geez I love this time of year !!
