Interstate car/bike buying

Post by Wattie »

I assume the rules for cars and bikes in NSW are the same.

But, if i was to buy a car from interstate, and drive it home to NSW.

I obviuosly have to goto rta and transfer the rego over.

Do i loose the rego that it had left on it, and have to re-register straight away?
Or do i just change it over to my name and drive around on VIC plates untill the rego runs out, then re-register in nsw?

im looking at buying from a dealer, who can probably change it b4 i buy it (its on the border) but i assume he'll want me to pay FULL on roads on a second hand car. :? is which case he can jam it. :?

If you are transferring it from VIC to NSW,
You have to put it in your name in VIC
then you can transfer in NSW by the normal means of rego.
When you are at VIC roads they have some paper work for you to fill out and you will get what's left on the rego via cheque about 3 weeks later.

I have done this twice already and never had an issue.

If you do not put it in your name before you leave VIC you will have to get blue slips and the works in NSW

hope this helps

Here in QLD you buy a car from interstate, bring it here and get a local roadworthy (safety certificate), then transport department will re-register it here and send off a slip to the interstate transport departmen, who will in turn issue you with a refund if one applies.

I'd reckon you'd have to change it over straight up as you'd have to transfer the rego to your name/Address etc. Not sure though.

Mate just hurry up already, you spend more time deciding over a car than you do deciding on what youare going to eat at the club........ ;)
