G A S

Post by Yankee »

Petrol, Fuel, gas..... whatever you call it, i think that i have been WAAAAY mislead and my bike is trying to tell me to change it's diet:
I have been using exclusively (going out of my way even) "Lead Replacement" fuel, namely Shell Super brand.
welp, the bike is running rough and it doesn't like to start anymore  ..... easily.
so, i was picking a few "others" brains and they basically said WTF!?! no way dude, use BP and BP only (basically)... but use their top shyte, voltron or some shyte like that?
ok, my bike has carbs. she's badly fouled-up, i'd say.... what do you reckon guys/gals?? Do I go with BP only? is it good for carbys? will it blow out the "damage" i've done thus far?
okay, cheers all!

As for carbon build up just go out and flog the hell out of it for a few hours that will fix it(on a closed track of course)or you could loan it to me and i can help you out

maaaaaaaaaaaaaaate...........
LRP is in a word.........shite
and ONLY suitable for 15yo Falcons and Holdens
LRP has a lower octane rating than anything else, and little in the way of detergents or aromatics that better petrols have....
even standard ULP is better than LRP
so DO NOT use it......

now, what to do???
get some good fuel system cleaner..(Holden and Ford sell a good one)
and a tank of your choice of ULP...Mobil BP or Caltex
get the cleaner in and go for a run
but beware, the use of the previous LRP may have pharkkked your plugs
so don't go too far...
and if OK
stay with your choice of ULP
I use Caltex or Mobil (I have no local Shell or BP servos)
and stick with 'em
and if you must use a PULP
do not use Opticrap..use BP Ultimate or Mobil 8000

cheers

 you're not really using LRP in your 2000 model bike are you?
Use manufacturer spec fuel which should be 91 RON or higher ULP (according to my handbook for the 2001 zx7r).
Unless your carbs are jetted use normal ULP (91ron), i don't know if there would be any benefit to running PULP (95+ ron). My preference is for BP in both the zzr600 (std ULP) and the zx7r (ultimate), i've heard that Caltex Vortex is also good. I avoid Shell Optimax unless theres no other avbl PULP, but my bro ran it in his R6 for 4 years no problems ( i use it in my car).

I use a fair bit of fuel doctor or lucas fuel system cleaner but it wont tune up your bike so to speak, use pulp only and possibly get a new set of plugs they shouldnt cost more than 20 bucks and if its still running bad take it for a carby clean, balance and tune and you probably wont know its the same bike. :D :D :D

Hell get anything into it other than LRP or diesel.
Why did you use LRP in it? Was it recommended by somebody? If so, shoot them next time you see them

Shell optimax is fine if you have your bike tuned to suit it. I ran it exclusively in my zx7r for over 4 years and my zx9 race bike for the last 3 years.. Unfortunately the petrol account that use to pay for it went down the tubes with the company I use to work for...
We have a United servo near where I live and I've used there premium a couple of times and its fine, and cheaper than the Shell..

LRP??? WTF? Surely you're taking the piss? I only ever use premium, unless I'm out in the sticks and they only have normal unleaded. And I'll push my bike rather than put Shell in it.

Do like Ian said, and change your plugs.

Like we spoke about this morning Marty, Bp Premium is the best imho, but i'll use any Pulp but Shell. I'd say whoever told you to use Lead replacement was confused or may of been a miscommunication. Dont go whacking Octane boost in it as well as the Premium cause that might be too big a shock for the Donk. Just run the tank low for a few fills n keep useing the good stuff it'll come good enough till your next service.

Dude!!! there is a sticker on your tank stating use 95 RON ULP only!! ( don't know about 2000 models but on my 02 and 04 there was ) you should go and flog the person that ever told you to use LRP?? hopefully you havent done any permanent damage.

Depending on how much is in your tank run it out and just fill up with BP Ultimate its the only fuel I would use or if no luck any other PULP except for Optimax.

Or drain it out and go down the servo and grab a 5litre can and fill it with BP Ultimate and once started go to the servo and fill up the rest.

I can feel your bikes pain from here!!! poor thing

Marty my man, Iam sure you have just got the names mixed up as I have seen you put PULP in at Samford, either use straight 91ron/octane Un-Leaded petrol or Premium Un-Leaded Petrol 98 ron/octane. Don't use Shell PULP, the ULP is ok As Far AS I Know.

IF you've been putting Leaded into your 2000 ZX6R, i'd say you've a fucked the exhaust system (As it has the cat built in where all the head pipes join up.. as far as i'm aware) And prob not done the engine any favours, as it is very clear to only user unleaded fuel.. good luck mate..

Edit: just confirmed from the 2000-2002 workshop manual.. you have a cat converter, so you can pretty much guarantee that would be rooted, as leaded rots the core.. Well that's my understanding of what happens when you run leaded in an unleaded vehicle.. Hope your mixed up, and if not, hope you've done no damage to the engine, etc
