That is actually normal. What is happening is that the insurers are now guaranteeing that work is done to a certain standard, so they are requiring that a minimum standard applies to the parts that are used in certain types of repair. They also have a standardised quoting system which costs parts and labour etc. What it means, is now you can get one quote, and it will more than likely be accepted by the insurance company.

If you read between the lines, it also means you can get repairs done cheaper if there is no insurance company involved.

Sounds like a new topic, where we all list our best (or worse repair bills)...?

At least you wern't on the bike, it hurts lots more when they hit your bike while you're on it - I know, TWICE.

your lucky,

when i was on my 16 and on my L's,
my Mum had a ZZR250 which i borrowed without asking.
parked it in the mitcham shopping centre carpark.
As i walked oyt i thought someone had nicked it, when i got to the park it was lying on its side, complete with broken peg, peg mount, bent handle bar, snapped brake lever scrathed exhaust and paintwork.
Boy did i cop it.
That took me a long time to pay for as the issurance had run out.

not fun.

Hey Timbo,
your lucky it came in just under $3000, and they fixed it!

Suffered similar damage to my ZZR250 when a [P]-Plater
lost control of his mum's car in the wet, slid out 180 degrees,
crossed into my lane and sent me sliding down the road.

(Damage; Front Wheel fairing, RHS fairing, RHS exhaust,
Front and Rear brake levers, RHS indicator, RHS peg)

He avoided me for weeks, never answering his phone. :x
Got to the point where i was considering  my next move.
Then out-of-the-blue his insurance company rang,
and told me he admitted 100% fault (must have got the guilt’s up).

The Repair Quote $3200 and Market Value $3500,
so insurance paid me out minus the salvage value $500.
I got to keep the bike and fixed it to my satisfaction for $90.

The bite is, because insurance company paid me out,
it is now classified as a Repairable Write-Off,
and i gotta get a RoadWorthy to keep it registered. :(

Since i am upgrading anyway, and for what it owes me,
i would have been happy to keep it as a second bike.
Now reconsidering, as RoadWorthy is gonna cost ~$1000. :(

If I am reading that right, you would still be up nearly $2k after fixing it?? I wouldn't have to think about that...

As a roadworthy, registered bike, it'd have to be worth at least $2.5k as a private sale (probably get more though), added to the $2k you get to keep from the settlement.

With not much effort you'd have nearly $5k extra to spend on your next bike, rather than $3k and a headache...

As I see it you can't really lose. Either you fix it and sell it to buy another bike or you fix it and keep it. Either way you still have an extra $2k left over for whatever you choose...

The only way I see you can lose is if you trade it in as is, or fix it and trade it in.

Just my opinion, of course.

Hey Felix,
thanks for the encouragement. :)

I must admit on paper it looks like i am $2k up,
however in reality it ain't as good as it looks.
(As is the case with accidents/insurance, when you add everything up, you always lose!)

It is gonna cost $1k just to get it RoadWorthy.
(workshop being very lenient on the RWC quote because i intend to keep it)

Even after RWC it ain't going to be fixed (or pretty);
Fairings will still be cracked/scratched,
Exhaust will still be scratched.

Also my gloves, jacket, boots are scratched,
and his insurance company wouldn't pay for any of that stuff.

Also, cause all of this has taken so long to sort out,
i have missed out on the MotoGP, and Mad Max Anniversary Rides!!

And, all of above doesn't touch on how close i came to sliding under a bus.

(Now i have just gone and got myself all upset again, arrgh!!)

Oh, I thought you were including all that for the $1k...

Makes it a bit tougher.

They actually should pay for the damage to boots, gloves etc, but you would probably have to prove they were no longer servicable. But it may be too late if you have accepted the cheque as settlement in full.

Nevermind.

I'd still lean towards fixing it and riding it a bit longer - you don't need to fix the can and fairings straight away. This way you buy yourself a bit of time and can think about what to do next, while you save a bit more money.

What gear were you wearing by the way? It obviously did its job - some of us would like to know.

Thanks again Felix, :)
a bit of positive encouragement makes the decision easier.

Also, one of my friends just got his [L]earner's Permit at HART.
If i keep the 2fiddy, he can use it to get some riding experience.

You're spot on about the gear; proving it wasn't serviceable was the hassle,
and i have already accepted the cheque as Full-and-Final Settlement.

The wet conditions caused me to slide as if i were on snow/ice.
Sensation was the almost the same as falling over on my snowboard and sliding down the mountain.
I think that familiarity allowed me to relax, and watch the vehicles pirouette around me.

Hence, my gear is just scratched, not ripped.
Looking at the scratched areas (palms, elbow, ankle, toes),
it was nice to see the protection features did their job. :)

Helmet ; SHOEI TZ-1 (Thankfully Not Damaged, :D )
Jacket ; Force Classic RMS
Gloves ; R-Jays; Leather; All Season
Boots ; Alpine Star; Gortex Wet Weather
Pants ; Hemp Jeans & Wet Weather Covers

I know i gotta get a better wet weather pants combo,
the only damage i suffered was a shock, stiffness and a bruise on my knee.
Padding around the knee might have saved the bruising.
