I remember getting snippets of advice and info from wherever I could in the beginning, it was so confusing. I wasn't sure who was right or who to listen to. I learnt to ride because I wanted to- I didn't have a partner who rode. My mentor was a friend who I caught up with every once in a while. Someone I could trust to guide me would have been invaluable.

Hey Strika, I've done a bit of riding with the MTCV/MSTCV/MSR/Whateverthey'recallingthemselvesthesedays over the years & I didn't think there was any single member who possessed all those attributes/skills that you mentioned.
So I'm curious, who is this "mentor" of yours?
Seems to me it can only be 1 of 2 or 3 people who've been riding with the club for that long & I REALLY hope it's not who I think it is.

By the way, I didn't say that this person was anything but a good solid road rider, who advanced my Novice skills! He does not ride at racetrack speed. But, racetrack speeds are not for the road are they? For you to say what you say obviously you either are, or think you are Mick Doohan!

He taught me loads of stuff, from basic mechanicals to full on engine strips and rebuilds. We did head gaskets, and valve adjustments as well as the usual routine maintanance issues. He also, at almost every stop did a debrief and offered thoughts on riding technique to help me go faster, safer!"

Some of my friends aren't into bikes (same as me) so the vast majority of my skills are all self taught through commuting and the odd weekend squirts alone, and the odd trackday , and learnt alot from you guy's with ksrc and i appreiciate all the help you have given me, i'm happy learning by myself through commuting and those sunday run's with the regular's, that's what i like to say instead of the crap i posted up before. used a bit of the guy's post ehehe.

Yes Brendan, there is nothing wrong at all with your riding..I must say you are sensible and in control, considering your age and experience..

Farkin hell.. you mean he don't ride a litre bike with 100cc ability??? Very unusual!!

Good onya Brendan .. It's a good thing you ride with a bit of maturity.. You may even get to live long enough to become a 'Strika/Wattie/Hoff/Dave 1-24/ etc... ' if you play your your cards right

I think you'd better read my post again matey, I did not infer that anyone was or wasn't this or that or that I am/was/will be any better at anything than anyone else.
I merely stated that I didn't think your 'mentor' rode well/fast AND had mechanical skills/knowledge, we may not be thinking about the same person.
FWIW, I WISH I was Mick Doohan (or GOD as I prefer to call him)

I think of several people as my riding mentors now - people who treat me as an equal, but give me occasional pointers, ranging from highly specific, to humourous (i.e, Wattie's frequent "just move yer arse off the seat for fuck's sake" comments).

But when I first started out, there was one person who mentored me damn near every weekend. Between encouraging comments, general chats about riding, specific pointers and limitless patience, I'll never forget the help I received from Ty, up and down the OPH. I'm sorry for all the times you had to wait and wait and wait for me to catch up, but I'm very thankful you did, because you were one of the most instrumental factors in improving my riding and my riding confidence.

Mentors are great. I would be very proud to one day have enough knowledge and ability to similarly pass on the stuff that has been passed on to me. So thanks to all the mentors out there - you provide things of great value- and a specific huge shout-out to Ty, who I consider privileged to have had as my mentor.
