Victa sold to US firm

The Age June 4, 2008 - 1:55PM

Pushing the Victa mower was once considered the only way to clip the lawn.
But ownership of the 56-year old Australian icon will now move overseas after its sale to a US-based company for $23 million.

GUD Holdings, which also owns the Sunbeam Electrical appliance brand, said it had sold its Victa Lawncare business to Briggs & Stratton, the world's largest manufacturer of air-cooled petrol engines and automobile locks and keys. According to a statement, Victa has sold more than 7 million lawnmowers since it was established in suburban Sydney in 1952.

One of its finest moments was featuring in the Sydney's 2000 Olympics opening ceremony as a quintessential Australian icon.

Briggs & Stratton, with headquarters in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, has been a long-standing supplier of four stroke engines to Victa, the statement said.

23 million? Is that correct? Does not sound much for US money (Youtube = 2 billion).

From what I understand, all they do here is assemble them. The motors are Briggs and Stratton anyway, the rest of the bits are made in China or wherever else they can be made cheapest, and demand had dropped off a fair bit due to "climate change" which I reckon probably has more to do with people doing more to their yards than just the traditional 1/4 acre of grass with a few concrete stepping stones to the Hills hoist
