I need help please - Front Brakes ZZR250

Post by NortikittyKat »

Someone please help me here.....

Hypothetically speaking if I was to replace the pistons and seals in the front brake caliper on a 1994 ZZR 250...

How many pistons and how many seals would I have to buy?

What does - single BAC 2 piston pin-slide mount actually mean in laymend girls terms... :( I am so confused...

BAC stands for Balanced Actuation Caliper, its just a technology which increases pad life and gives the breaks a better feeling

the zzr250 uses a dual piston setup at the front, so i would assume 2 pistons and 2 seals? correct me if im wrong.

Edit: attached is an exploded view of the front caliper, showing the 2 pistons and the seals, hope this helps.

Thanks for that Mr W.

Quoted $217 to replace the pistons and seals on the front caliper, being suspicious like I am rung Kawaka to get parts of brand spanker and got quote $118 for a big piston/small piston and 4 seals. So that means $99 labor, if mechanic is buying brand newbies at retail price then. Was a bit puzzled if this would be right. Was then told that the front caliper had four pistons, so parts would actually cost $204.... but I was sure that it didn't have 4 pistons.... Sometimes I hate being a girl and not having this sort of information just built in.....

Mr W is right as is the diagram he supplied. There are only two pistons one small one large.
If you don't get sense from your mechanic, go elsewhere.

yep definitely 2 pistons. So who ever told you that it has 4 either doesnt know what they are talking about or they are trying to rip you off.

We have the zzr250 manual in the general tech help section, (its the GPX250 and further down a zzr supplimental) the picture came straight out of that, so i dare a mechanic to argue with that. Also i just finished pulling mine apart and i only saw 2 pistons.

$217 is a bit high if you ask me. It wouldnt take more than an hour to pull that thing apart and together again. I was going to say ill do it for you for free, then i saw where you live... Unless you can get it down to me in Sydney, i cant help you :D

Like Marty said, if you are getting grief from this mechanic, go to another one. Im sure some fellow QLDers can suggest places to go.

Thanks Guys. Have solved the problem.

The bike is not at my usual mechanic's. It has been taken to a mechanic's that I am not familiar with at all. And its not my bike anymore, just trying to help someone out.

The guy I usually take my bikes too would have asked me to come into his workshop and shown me and explained everything in detail if I didn't understand, which is one of the reasons I take my bikes to him, but I couldnt get hold of him yesterday :?
