Re: How would you respond to this?
Id say do what i did.
Step 1
Book in to get your licence and dont tell her.
Step 2
Come home and show her the licence while yelling SURPRISE!
Step 3
Go out and buy a bike and dont tell her.
Step 4
Then come home with the bike and see Step 2
At first the missus was all against me getting one. But i snuck out and got one anyway...
so my answer would be HTFU and get one

Re: How would you respond to this?
I cannot understand the idea of a partner wanting to stop you from doing something you obviously love, be it motorcycles, collecting bottle tops, whatever - surely it's a given that you'll resent them for it & what sort of relationship is built on a foundation of resentment?
The "It's too dangerous" line is bullshit & 99% of the time not the real reason he/she wants you to stop doing it, it's because they are incredibly shortsighted & insecure people who want to have control of you & the relationship so they can feel comfortable & any person who is willing to be controlled by another for the rest of their life is less than pitiful - that's not IMHO, it's FACT.
Another favourite of mine is when I tell people they should come & try a Trackday & they say something like - "I don't trust myself on a racetrack, I'd probly kill myself"
To which I always reply - "Honesty is the best policy mate, you mean you're just TOO SCARED" & walk away shaking my head.

Re: How would you respond to this?
Oh, yeah, I forgot... the best way to respond when a bloke tells you his missus made him sell the bike/won't let him get a bike/etc is to call their masculinity into question - something like,
"Gee, you've got a fairly deep voice for a bloke with NO FUCKING BALLS"
"Do you prefer Tampax or Libra?"
"It must be a nuisance to have to squat to piss"
"Vodka, lime & soda then mate?"
Or just walk away in obvious disgust making whip cracking or meowing noises
At least it'll get 'em thinking, & that's the first step in rescuing someone from eternal SOFTCOCKDOM & possible future Homosexuality.

I'm with you guys ... It's the whole package !! hobbies, interests, extended family the lot - It's these things that goes into making people who they are. What gives someone the right to pick and choose which bits they want? ... All in all find someone who shares your passion and is willing to accept you as you are

It all comes down to how you ride it.....
Re: How would you respond to this?
Exactly my thoughts guys, they are using their wives as an excuse for their own issues, so your response would really have to come down to how up front you want to be with the person who said it. At the end of the day, they aren't riders so are only worthy of passing conversation anyway.dave#3 wrote:I was thinking the same thing Billy - particularly as I think female riders hear this line more often than male riders.the kid wrote:And how many wanna be's use the old missus line as an excuse for not getting a bike ?

Re: How would you respond to this?
In all my long term relationships i have had a bike before i met them, most hadnt had much experiance on a bike so i took them on suttle rides and slowly upped the pace, then what ya know they loved it.Mind you kazz is not a fan of this even though she has her own bike when we go for a run on mine my ribs get sore
And as for the i used to have one of them but i sold it , which i get a lot when the old z900 comes out to play gennerally my comment is That was silly wasnt it
And last but not least the guys that sold there bikes because they were told to .They are never going to get out until the dishes are washed, lawns mowed, bed made, house vacumed. So even if they wanted to its to late because its dark and there ASS is OWNED

That's drawing a long bow there my friend. Some people do genuinely believe that motorcycling is so dangerous that it should be banned. They're the one's you won't change, because they won't go near a bike, much less get on one. I don't believe that it is controlling to not want your loved one to be a statistic.Kwak addict wrote:The "It's too dangerous" line is bullshit & 99% of the time not the real reason he/she wants you to stop doing it, it's because they are incredibly shortsighted & insecure people who want to have control of you & the relationship so they can feel comfortable ...
I still worry when HM goes to work in the mornings, because the road is narrow, winding and full of log trucks. Add ice to the mix on these cold mornings and that concern is understandable. On the other side of the coin, I think nothing of getting on my own bike and pissing off to the other end of the state - with no thought that he might worry about me mixing it with cage driving numpties 300km away.

I bought my bike while he was unconscious in hospital.

Re: How would you respond to this?
Depends on the situation...
If rebel without any balls wasn't into bikes when the relationship started, suck it up - he'd be just as pissed if she went off and got a horse.
However, if he was into bikes and had previously owned a bike - grow a pair and go get one. It's part of who you are and she needs to accept it.

Re: How would you respond to this?
After reading this thread, I think you're right Billy. Talking more to Dave about it, and it appears that I get told this excuse a lot more often than he does. Maybe it is just a case of some blokes feeling they need an excuse for not having a motorbike, especially if a girl has one...the kid wrote:And how many wanna be's use the old missus line as an excuse for not getting a bike ?
BTW, just in case it needs to be cleared up: This thread wasn't aimed at anyone on this board at all - I understand completely about compromising in a relationship, and making joint decisions. I'm not taking a jab at anyone here - my jabs are either direct and unhidden or friendly ones.
There's two things about the phrase that bug me; the whole "permission" aspect, and the disrespect angle (bagging out your missus) - both entirely different issues from joint decisions and compromises. Ty (only mentioning you, because you've already commented!) - I've heard you explain why you don't currently have a bike, and it had nothing in common with the whiny ball-less "I would, but wifey won't let meeeeee" that I'm talking about.
Anyway, I'd just heard the phrase *again* from my new neighbour and thought I'd bring it up here. I'm going with "feels inadequate so slags out his missus to make himself feel less ball-less" as the reason for the comment. Which is funny, because it actually makes the bloke appear even lamer! I think I might just go with a raised eyebrow and a slightly disdainful look of superiority as a response
