Conehead helmets (pinched from another forum)

Post by mick_dundee »

Hello
An Echuca school friend of mine Donald Morgan is the current ABC Inventor of the year. He developed the CONE-HEAD. It is a shock absorbing foam liner for motorcycle helmets, incorporating low-density cone-shaped foam structures within high density foam. The CONE-HEAD liner acts like a crumple zone around the head to absorb and dissipate impact forces more effectively than current liners. It even has varying density to match the varying skull thickness. It's brilliant and is a potential life saver.

Donald used to be a radiographer and noticed that motorcycle riders in accidents had significant brain injuries despite the fact that their (Standards Approved) helmets were relatively undamaged. He observed that the liners were not doing much impact absorption and so has developed a far more effective solution (and is getting the Standards and testing changed to be more realistic). It isn't on the market, yet.
I had lunch with him last week and he mentioned that he has been nominated for the Next Big Thing award and it would be good if your members could vote for him at :

http://nextbigthingaward.com/2008_final ... -head.html

A win of this will help him progress the development and marketing of Conehead.
Please vote and send this on to all your mates so that all those riders in our families can have the chance of a safer riding experience in the future.

Graham Goeby

Note: I have no commercial interest in this...only have the good of motorcyclists in mind, and want to encourage Donald in his endeavours...development of such a significant product by an individual is not easy.

One of the reasons that there are brain injuries is that everyone thinks the snell standard is the ducks nuts. For a very severe impact it is, but on lighter impacts it results in unnecessarily stiff helmets. I remember seeing a big destructive helmet test showing that the non snell approved helmets were more protective for the less catastrophic impacts by virtue of imposing smaller accelerations. This works until you run out of crush distance and then you're fucked.

I could have done with one of these last night.

Hat is fucked, 30 mins of memory lost and few other bingles and I was only doing 35Kph.

I'm just off for CT scan and X-ray now - haven't had a chance to check the bike out yet. I don't recall the accident, but I think the BMX is OK.

Hahaha!

I'd rate the BMX as faster than your 10 anyways!

So when are you going to give up the BMX riding and start using your track bike? It seems the safer option!

It says he has it licensed through a major international helmet company, so why do we need to vote?
