practice for P's

Post by MrWasabi »

I am going to go for my P’s test some time soon and I wanted to map out the test course in a car park to practice…
I went to the RTA website, and found a layout of the tests, but some dimensions aren’t given.
Example http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/licensing/tes ... _stop.html
Doesn’t tell me how wide the left turn has to be

http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/licensing/tes ... aking.html

doesn’t tell me how far the blue and yellow cones are apart

anyone that has done it or remembers it could you shed some light?

From what Ive been told by mates who have just done it. Dont worry too much as you get plenty of practice the morning of the test. Then after the road ride (just dont run into anyone, drop the bike or fang it) its the test... But your meant to have been practicing for like 3-4 hours that morning on it!

There's another post about someone getting jibbed for time... Your meant to get taught a whole heap on the day and the rest "should" be a breeze if your competent!

If your really needing to practice, mark out your 6.1 metre turn and get used to left and right turns slow speed. The only other hard part is the cone weaving... Otherwise its not too bad should you have some kays under your belt!

i second that... i did notice the stuff online when i was on my L's but didnt bother practicing... u get hours of practice in the morning where if u have a decent instructor he will actually make u do harder stuff than in the actual test, for example cone weave and right hand u-turn... if u have some decent hours under you u will be right... biggest tthing that kills most people is nerves....

i had a guy at my test on a brand spanking new vtr250... failed the brakeing tetst cos he got nervous and braked before the starting cones... the bike would shit it in...

control the nerves and u will be fine

not really that nervous about it, ive had heaps of ride time, been riding for 5 months now and been up to the PITS once. But i wanted to practice the course before i actually did it.
I was under the impression that when you got there it was straight to the test then, you went out for a ride, and if everything checked out you passed.

I didnt know that they actually give you practice time.
what i will do tho is practice the tight u turns... last thing i want to do is put my foot down

thanks guys.

The only thing that you have to be careful of is the cone weave and u-turn. When I did it, they were the only two places anybody lost marks. The cone weave is just a matter of practice and finding your rhythm on the day as far as I'm concerned, and the U-turn is purely psychological. During practice I was doing them perfect time and time again but then I put my foot down and looked at (and therefore ran over) the line. In my opinion, it's a fairly hard test to fail if you just relax and do things the way you normally would do them anyway. 8)

I had a PDF of the layour somewhere mate. Although it was the old one when I was teaching it which was harder than the current. The offset cones used to be 1.2 meters apart offset by 0.5m but they've now made it easier and the Uturn was 5.5m but is now 6.0 or thereabouts .The turn box was wider on the exit then the entry and I think was 1.5m on the exit.

If I can find the PDF I'll PM you and email it. If you can do the old one you'll kill the new one

Practise your slow riding before the course and you'll be halfway there, so long as you can brake and swerve OK. Do some slow circles while using your slow riding and that will get you through all the turning stuff. Relax and have fun and listen to the Roadcraft lecture , it's good stuff
