What's the scam?

Post by Shifty »

Ebay: 280211706897

Do they just make money on shipping? Still seems cheap...

Go for it! the freight cost seems fine as long as they dont bump it up once you have one the auction.
The cost to manafacture screens over there would be a pitance

I think the idea is a psychological one. Get the starting price down as low as you can, and people may spontaneously bid without realising the insane markup they put on postage. It's wrong, but it would bring eyeballs off the listings page as the initial marked price is so low. The other reason is to do with listing fee's, i suspect if the listing price is lower, the cost to the seller is lower if it is bought... or is that on final price? i can never remember.....

I bought a pair of studio speakers for my home theatre system in a similar way, listed as $50 starting bid, $30 postage(australia wide). i was aware of this, unhappy but aware. My bid won at $65, but i was up for a further $20 for postage, and when i received the postage (funny enough posted in sydney  it came to something like $10 or so, even with internal administration costs, theres no way they can slap $20 on the top. I'll be honest though, even with postage, it was a damned sight cheaper than any other way i was going to get a pair of this particularly nice speaker system.

Cool. I'll just suss out if it'll look shithouse or not, find one for the later model (assuming different?), and then go from there.

Probably stating the obvious but many ebay stores use this technique of low listing and insane posting AND HANDLING fees... I have paid over $20 for postage and when it has arrived it was $4 worth of posatge and the $1 envelope... but because of the handling cost you have no recourse really.. basically you have to think of ebay stores and many individual sellers as people who are making money.. therefore they factor in a combination of listing price & postage that gets them the minimum they want for the item (which will be at a profit for them don't forget)... if people bid higher then great, they get more...

Just factor in the postage on what you think is a reasonble overall price and you still find most things are bargains compared to RRP or brick n mortar stores.

My Missus runs a professional ebay store & her hint for the day is bid in the last 15 seconds the maxium ammount you are willing to pay do not ever put a bid in earlier than that cause all you are doing is bumping up the price ;)
For freight from HK the $30 odd is not unreasonable either

robracer, thats what i usually do. unless im not able to be online. I use some sniper website thing that gets its operating costs via paypal donations, but it has a bit of a reliability issue and you've got a 1 in ten chance for the site not to be able to submit a bid for you, which shits me off, esp when its something i really want.

Have used sniper sites before but as you have said its risky, we have a few powerseller friends that can help out when we cant be on line at the end of an auction, its the safest way ;)

 you see it all the time, its all about making $$$ some sellers are after the quick buck & ripping off the punters or can be just plain lazy & list one overseas cost to cover any location.
All it takes is one question about postage or freight to the seller well before auction end to clarifiy total cost so there are no suprises, you might be lucky & they back down saying it was an error or they had trouble working out the cost  Bull Sh#t

..no scam but I wasn't sure at the time
I bought one about a month ago...for 1c + $36 shipping

took a week to arrive (undamaged in ½ mile of bubble wrap)
quality is good ..its as advertised

can't see why or how they do it
I was wary of a card scam but its thru Payal
so it should be secure

my 2c

cheers
