Get a 99 ZX9R they really rock, if you think earlier model is in your price range... Save up more cash.. it'll be worth it!
make sure you have a test ride but seriously they are awesome! Do IT. Do it.

They can have a habit to popping out of second gear it the dogbones / selector forks / drums are damaged - MickC has written an article on replacing the gearbox in his when it happened. Having said that Phil has 130 odd thousand km's on his and it's OK, and my tracky hasn't had any problems (yet).Soundwave wrote:Just to piggyback off this thread, i was in the same position and have decided to get a 98 zx9r. Re: ZX7-R or ZX9-R, That is the Question
If you can't afford a C model or later ZX9 then go for the ZX7. It is a better bike than the ZX9B model.
I had a similar issue with very limited funds and ended up purcahsing a ZXR750 (older version of the ZX7). I have not regreted it as it is great and not that bad on long runs either. I have done two trips to Philip Island on it form Sydney with out too much discomfort.
Check the bike sales section of this forum there may be something there in your price range.

Re: ZX7-R or ZX9-R, That is the Question
On your test ride, give it the berries in THIRD, if it jumps out of gear, it's gearbox rebuild time, if not then you are pretty much gravy as the rest of the bike is pretty well bullet proof, only other things I can think of is, front brakes, the 6 pot calipers require regular cleaning to maintain effectiveness. Compression damping adjuster on the forks can seize up if ridden in wet weather a lot, in saying that I ride mine in all weathers and my adjusters are fine.

my nine has over 123, but they are easy k's, never been thrashed

seriously, you 9 has only got past the run in stage, change the oil regilarly and have the valves checked and it will last a whole lot longer......and NOTHING will be comparable to the 9

Re: ZX7-R or ZX9-R, That is the Question
I had the 98ZX7 for 6mths odd & the 99 ZX9 for nearly 12mths.
Of the 2, the ZX9 by far was more comfortable for distant riding.
Can't answer Q on fuel economy because my memory isent that
good
