You need to start the presentation/lesson with a picture of a dog hanging its head out of a car window

Why do I ride? Peace, freedom, control and adrenalin. Some people wanna kick a piece of leather, others hit a ball, I lean around corners.

That's awesome mike. dog out a window. or on the back of a ute. I was gonna make a comparison between golf and riding; the pursuit of perfection and all that. But I totally agree that It's really not something that can be explained, only experienced. But hey, Unis love it when you do independent research! Anybody know of good Australian videos of riding the twisties on Youtube?
See here, young man,

From Conroy's Gap to Castlereagh,
There's none can ride like me.

A teacher from Mt Druitt? Who cares if he can spell or not? Apply for the year 12 English Lit class mate! Easy money.

Edit: For what its worth you would probably end up over qualified for any position here in Sunbury though :D

It is the only time that I forget about everything else in the world- riding to me is like meditation to a monk. :D

Robert M Pirsig - Zen and The Art of Motorcycle Maintenance wrote:You see thing vacationing on a motorcycle in a way that is completely different from any other. In a car you’re always in a compartment, and because you’re used to it you don’t realize that through the car window everything you see is just more TV. You’re a passive observer and it is all moving by you boringly in a frame.

On a cycle the frame is gone. You’re completely in contact with it all. You’re in the scene, not just watching it anymore, and the sense of presence is overwhelming. That concrete whizzing by 5 inches below you foot is the real thing, the same stuff you walk on, it’s right there, so blurred you can’t focus on it, yet you can put you foot down and touch it anytime, and the whole thing, the whole experience, is never removed from immediate consciousness.
I agree with BM - its like a form of meditation. Just me, my bike, the open road and my own thoughts.

I would say firstly, that it's not the destination but the journey!

Like a lot of us we crave a thing called adrenaline and we all get that at different riding levels which makes motorcycling unique.
One other thing that stands out for me is that it's a skill to ride a motorcycle that a lot of us take for granted, thats why when we haven't ridden for a while we appreciate that first ride again and realise how our skills have dwindled over time.

You can't go past the fact that you see a hell of a lot more as well! If you want!! (depending on how fast you go!)

For me, I like to ride near the limit, not so much on the road but on the track as it hightens your awareness and thats is why you are so gassed at the end of a day on the track or even a ride like the Oxley, etc!

Oh, I nearly forgot, the cameraderie riders share!

Riding is me time,

im in my own little world, where cars are animals trying to attack me...

i have the music in my ears, im dodging cars or just feeling the bike moving beneath me.

Cornering hard is awesome, you are pretty much defying gravity, its more than a hobby, its a way of life. if i couldnt ride i'd be dead. :?

What age kids do you have to teach the lesson to?

What subject areas are being covered? I'm assuming a SOSE lesson???

What are your learning outcomes (what should the kids gain from the lesson) and what are the learning indicators? Are you trying to convince them to ride bikes (head in the cloads talk of freedom will not achieve much in terms of learning or teaching) or will it be a discussion of the benefits of motorcycles in society.

I would be inclined to focus the lesson on the pros and cons of motorcycles as a transport option. Enjoyment is part of that but there is also practicality concerns and safety concerns that could be discussed in relation to trafic conjestion and environmental (quality of life through less commuting time/polution) benefits. You can also talk about recreational motorcycling as a social activity and relaxation, both of which have enourmous mental health benefits.

It's a great topic (I would obviously agree with that). I'm not sure how you make it terribly relevent to students who aren't old enough to ride on the road. Will dirt riding be included? :)

I ride because it's a shitload of fun, you get a bit of a rush (speed, danger etc) and you get to hang out with like minded people and jibber shit. I think it keeps you in contact with your youth a little too ie it's one thing I've done ever since I was a little tacker.

Besides Golf is stupid and the shoes are pharkin horrble. I hate golf. I used to have a sticker on my trailer which said "because golf courses should be motocross tracks". Have I mentioned I hate golf....
