Why Ducatis and Harleys are such brilliant and magical bikes

STANFORD, California (Reuters) - The more wine costs, the more people enjoy it, regardless of how it tastes, a study by California researchers has found.
Researchers at the Stanford Graduate School of Business and the California Institute of Technology found that because people expect wines that cost more to be of higher quality, they trick themselves into believing the wines provide a more pleasurable experience than less expensive ones.
Their study, published on Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, says that expectations of quality trigger activity in the medial orbitofrontal cortex, the part of the brain that registers pleasure. This happens even though the part of our brain that interprets taste is not affected.
While many studies have looked at how marketing affects behavior, this is the first to show that it has a direct effect on the brain.
The researchers said that when 20 adult test subjects sampled the same wine at different prices, they reported experiencing pleasure at significantly greater levels when told the wine cost more. At the same time, the part of the brain responsible for pleasure showed significant activity.
"We have known for a long time that people's perceptions are affected by marketing, but now we know that the brain itself is modulated by price," said Baba Shiv, an associate professor at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, and one of the authors of the study.
"Marketers are now going to think twice about reducing the price," Shiv said.
According to the study, if an experience is pleasurable, the brain will use it to help guide future choices. That conclusion has important implications for marketing that aims to influence perceptions of quality such as expert ratings, peer reviews, information about country of origin, store and brand names and repeated exposure to advertisements.

Meh people liking Ducati's and Harley's has nothing to do with their price, its just parochial brand spanking at its finest.
Hell this kind of behaviour is rife everywhere, including KSRC!

It's rife, but the brand spanking intensifies when there's a price premium. How else can they justify spending 1.5x or 2x as much? You get all this wank about italian/german/american soul/sprit/culture and other tripe. I think the hifi world is even worse though.Nucci wrote:Meh people liking Ducati's and Harley's has nothing to do with their price, its just parochial brand spanking at its finest.

Re: Why Ducatis and Harleys are such brilliant and magical bikes
Consider this: There is only one Ducati franchise in Sydney (Frasers) and they have to give permission if another franchise wants to open. We tried to get one when we opened and they said 'No'. Why wouldn't they? They have a monopoly on the Sydney market and set the prices....
Now, how many Kawasaki/Honda/Suzuki/Yamaha shops are there all competing for your dollar? Do the math...

Poeple are willing to pay a higher price for a "perceived" premium product...
otherwise we'd all be driving around in Kia's and Lada's...

Don't know about Harley's, never owned 1 but having had 2 duke's with nearly a 100,000 k's between them I think there worth every penny you pay for them.
A lot of naysayers will no doubt disagree, but for those who have owned a modern Duke I think few would disagree.

Re: Why Ducatis and Harleys are such brilliant and magical bikes
I've always been a believer in the philosophy "Buy the cheapest car your ego will allow!". The idea being that it will cost you less to buy an old dunger and keep it running then lose a huge amount buying new cars.
However I dunno what the bike philosophy might be? Maybe....."Buy the fastest bike your wife will let you ride" or maybe "buy the fastest bike that you won't fall off of" or "buy the fastest bike that doesn't frighten you" or if your a Harley rider..."Buy the bike that lets you wear cowboy clothes"

I live with fear everyday but on weekends she lets me ride.

2 mates of mine ride ducatis 996 and S4R monster,
both have had a fair amount of problems.. low reliability it seems - especially with the electronics
Dukes look nice, italian styling is great, but they don't seem to have the precision of the
japanese bikes.
Ask yourself this though - if someone gave you one free bike to purchase, any bike at all and no cost limit
what brand or bike would you get? would it still be a kawa?
i'd get a Y2K for the 25 minute ride to work through traffic hehe
