Just considering buying a new or new to me bike.

Post by Strika »

I have been having a little think about buying another bike. I want to get rid of the Beemer as it has truly been a money pit, and while I am reluctant to get rid of the 9, 80k's is about where it starts to become unsaleable. So it may be wise to consider trading it in also. I dunno about that last one, it will depend what I am offered for it. If the figure is below 5k I will just keep it as a spare and just trade the beemer.

I really am unsure as to what to buy due to not yet knowing what sort of money they will offer me on the 9 and what I would buy. If the bike I end up buying is more touring than sport, the 9 will def stay, but if I buy another bike more on the sports side of touring as the 9 is, then I won't need the 9. So it's a little mixed up as to which way I will go yet. The decision would be simple if they still made ZX9R's!!! But as they don't, I will have to consider something else. I have considered all sorts of things, from DL1000's and katoom 990 Adventures and dukes, to ZX12s and 14s as well as GTRs. I am also considering (yeah yeah yeah, I know, I shoulda learnt my lesson from the last one I had) a new model CB1000R if they are as good as they look in the pics and on paper.....and if they import them into Oz with some other colour than that horrible feckin green. :?

If I keep the 9 then a new ZRX would also be in the consideration set.

As this bike will need to do a few miles, I am only considering the larger capacity stuff. Not that smaller stuff won't do the k's, it's just that litre plus machinery is far more relaxed to ride over a long day than a more buzzy smaller capacity mill.

So Let's see what's on the list so far.

GTR1400 (FJR1300 perhaps even St1300)
ZX12/14 (Can you still find 12's around new?)
ZRX12
CB1000R (only if they come in a diff colour to the one at the Motorcycle show)
Z1000 (It would need some money spent to make me happy but)

Whatever I buy, has to be as versatile or near as the 9! Intentions are to fit it with horrible hard luggage!!

So, gis ya thoughts good or bad! 8)

GTR1400 - Already has the luggage on, and a nice little donk to run you a long. Shaft drive too! But, if you don't go down that road, at LEAST stay with the big K. We all know what happened last time you wandered off! A ZRX12 would be awesome too, however, I've yet to see one with more than a gearsac on it.

From the reports the GTR is pretty special although a bit too touring for me. If I were to punt the 10 for something less sporting I'd seriously think of the ZX14 or a Z1000 just for the fun factor. You're right though youd have to spend a little on the zed ie ditch the pipe and some suspension work. I guess if you're doing as many kays as you though a fairing would be nice.

Slightly left field and not what you want but I love the new Aprilia Shiver. Their warehouse is around the corner from here and the bastards are out playing on them all the time. Small and probably a shit fuel range and no luggage capacity but they look like a stack of fun and a bit different.

...bugger just read your hard luggage comment at the bottom. Get the GTR....

I'm waiting for the CB1000R as well, and there is 3 colours on the cards, and gun metal silver, black, and that fluro colour.

In terms of spec it should blow the Z1000 out of the water.

i've heard also that the new european emisions laws will have all manufacturers rethinking their lines, bye bye SV1000 and VTR1000 - end of the line for japanese twins.

i don't think the bike will be unsellable just cause it has 80k's on the clock, just means u will have to sell it at a cheaper price!

I would go the 12 as well, They are just a big ZX9 anyway. But sadly I don't think you would get one new now.
The ZX14 or ZRX would be my option. The GTR is too tourer and the ZX1400 would still be comfortable enough for long trips, so would the ZRX.

VFR800 - full lugage option, bullet proof motor fun when vtec kicks in.

I'd go a 12 over a 14 if you still wanna scratch, but I'd never tried to steer either in the twisties. Perhaps spend the $$$ on a recondition of the 9, rebuild the motor, new shocks etc???

Hmm, a tough call Marty. I was actually quite impressed with the GT1400; it's very touringesque, but handled reasonably well, had a heap of torque and was damned comfortable. My personal choice would be another low mileage zx9r, an F series with about 10,000 kms can be had for about 9 large with a bit of negotiation (I'm sure you're up to it :)) or a zrx12.

the decision is this....

do u want 2 bikes?? or just 1??

will u get anything for the 9?? or do u just ride it till it dies (could take a while)

i'd prob look for another zx9r, low km..if thats what u love!!
