Sitting duck

Post by javaman »

Well it had to happen (again), got rear-ended at a big roundabout while giving way to traffic. Minor cosmetics - damaged muffler and broken bracket and the guy was not being an asshole about it but it did put me in a very dangerous position as I was pushed to oncoming traffic. Good thing the big truck from the right was slow and able to stop :?

How do you guys avoid these things ? At red lights I would simply lane-split, but roundabout ?

btw. the first time it happened it was a minor 'bump' by a chick.

Glad to hear you're ok Andi and that damage to vehicle (yours) was minimal, hope they get their insurance shit sorted so you're back on the road again soon (assuming the bike is unrideable currently).

Rode to Southbank this morning to drop off some blood, farkin amazing how many fuckwits have licenses...

Andi

glad you are ok
and the bike is only minor

possible solution..?? you sorta touched on it
stick to the far right side of the lane (nearly on the line)
as you approach the roundabout and pull up

habit I got into after I nearly got rearended a few years ago
the cager actually ended up stopping ...next to me

cheers

Sit far right or left whichever offers the best escape, always look for an escape route, be ready to take it, always sit in gear and watch every bastard in the mirror until it's time to move off.

Good to hear you got out of it OK

Glad to hear you're ok Andi, man could have been soooo much worse.

I usually try to keep right, in front of the driver, maybe tap the rear brake to make the light flash.

Cheers

Thanks for the tips guys. I somewhat remember this "tip" to always stay near the line but later abandoned it due to finding the car position itself *next* to me :? ... anyway I'll experiment.

Yeah I am so glad to come out unscatched, but it was a terrible experience. It was as if the bike "came alive" onto its own ! I guess I was "lucky" that I managed to keep it upright. It was even rideable.

Anyway it was a good week spoilt. I was actually coming home from a four-day company event in Dixon's Creek. It's right in the centre of twisty town and I had been enjoying the roads around kinglake/flowerdale/chum creek on a daily basis 8)

I do this quite often.... if a car is approaching me from behind while I am stopped for anything lights/roundabouts... i tap the brake in the vein attempt it will grab their attention...

Good to hear you're alright andi.Know what you mean about roundabouts,i always lane filter at red lights if i have enough time to reach the front before it turns green, but roundabouts it's usually the same as matt but aswell as holding the brake i leave it in gear with enough space in front so i can move (somewhere???) if need be.
Hope you're back on the road soon.

If I put a circuit which makes the brake light flashes when active, is that legal ?

bad news about getting hit...a slightly different situation I once had a woman stop dead in front of me cause she thought a person was going to step out in front of her well FMD I had no where to go & just had to drop the bike on its side & go under her rear end.... mate there could be any number of reasons for cages to do stupid things & if it happend behind you then what chance have you got, A way of warning cages behind me is to tap on the brakes a few times if im just using engine braking that way the know something is hapening before I finally apply the brakes to stop. best thing is you can flash as fast as you want ;)

damn....
i try to stay in the left lane, and keep the road to the left as an escape road...

but really, the best way to avoid it, is to move out of that shithole!!
