WTF is going on with the Gold Coast and al the carnage.
I just dont get it I have been riding 2.5 years and still learning and in the last 12 months I have noticed a big increase in bike accidents in that time which often ended in death. Is it just more people riding or are the limits being pushed all the time on the roads.

its pretty bad this year, thats for sure. Hard to pin a reason, I know the increase in the death rate in the SE Qld corner was one of the major reasons that RedRoo started his 'mentoring' rides.

too many people trying to ride outside the limit of their abilities...
come into corner too hot....panic....stand bike up....cram on brakes...leave road....crash.
I have to wonder how often that happens.
OR
flying along straight on brand new insanely fast sports bike at 200kph++...crest hill...see 40kph sign...panic....stand bike up....cram on brakes...leave road....crash.

bloody hell - I know that area well, one of my mates lives just around the corner from Markeri St !
21 in a year is just bullshit. It wouldn't surprise me if the entire Q-Ride system was scrapped soon, and replaced with a much more draconian system that does not include bike shops doing the training !

wonder if it has anything to do with inexperienced riders getting high powered bikes with the "I wont ride it fast" mentalityGosling1 wrote:bloody hell - I know that area well, one of my mates lives just around the corner from Markeri St !

Re: WTF is going on with the Gold Coast and al the carnage.
Makes me wonder if the lack of dirt bike riding areas has anything to do with the number of young riders riding roadies? I only just got back into roadies after seeing my KTM sitting in the garage unused for so long. Having more riding areas, where young riders (including kids and teens) can hone their skills can only help once they get their licence and hit the road.
My mother-in-law did her licence through Morgan & Wacker, the instructor was a complete wanker, did no instructing, just sat back and played with himself. He did pass her, but my father-in-law ended up getting a refund, and sent her to another Q-ride course where she actually received proper instruction, the instructor was patient, helpfull and concerned enough to make sure she developed her skills. And as a result she came away a much better and more confident rider.
But for someone to rock up and do a 1 or 2 day course on a mid-size bike, then race out and buy a ZX14 (or similar) is a recipie for disaster. The state of the roads doesnt help.

Airfilters on ZZR's are required to stop scooters, pedestrians and small animals getting stuck in your intake ports!

Dead right (pardon the pun) ! - Do they do a LAMS scheme up in Qld ?Phil wrote:......wonder if it has anything to do with inexperienced riders getting high powered bikes with the "I wont ride it fast" mentalityits the lack of experience that is the key, not how fast the bike goes or the engine capacity....
Some background on a chookie as a kid sure helped me when I was learning to ride........back in those days, there were free tracks on undeveloped blocks all over the place........not any more......

++1 Gos - I started on a BSA Bantam unreg. paddock basher then got into trials bikes (TY175). Offroad whether slow or fast is a good grounding for the road & the younger the better!
I've spent over 40 years of my life riding bikes .... the rest of it, I wasted ..

What it doesn't say in that news paper article about the motorcycle accidents is that in the third mentioned accident on November 7th that the biker died because the end of a strap, holding his luggage onto the bike, was too long and got caught around the rear wheel causing the rider to loose control, hit a guard rail and chuck the biker off into the path of the truck. However there is no mention of that in the article.
I don't understand the first accident either. If you look at whereis.com and look up Bermuda street , Mermaid waters then scan down 500 metres south of Markeri road intersection. (To get a clear idea click the photo option (left hand side) to see the actual road.)
What's strange about this accident is it appears the road is a two lanes and the bends look to be quite gentle?? I wonder how fast you would have to go to loose control on those bends?

Re: WTF is going on with the Gold Coast and al the carnage.
Remember comparing the Q-Ride system v the NSW LAMS and thinking that it sounded good. Why? Because I could get on a R1 and start really blasting around the countryside. What a stupid system. But then again if you're over 30 you can pretty much do the same in NSW once you pass your L's. And the numbers in NSW support that it's the guys who are getting their licenses over 30 who are making up a disproportionate number of the fatalities. They're jumping on sportsbikes that they can't handle or overweight cruisers. Both systems have flaws and need attention.

I did the full HART course in Melbourne and it was the best thing I could have done.
Fotunately, it rained when I was riding so it gave me more wet weather confidence.
I think, given the performance of today's bikes, EVRYONE should be made to do a full safety awareness and defensive riding course before they sit for their licence.
If you don't cut it in this course, you do it again and again until experienced riders/instructors think you are capable of sitting for your licence.
Then and only then are you eligable to ride on the road for 2 years on a 600cc or less before moving to a bigger bike.
