The only issue I have heard of with those tyre clamp style tie downs, is in the event of an unseen puncture, the tyre will deflate and loose it's grip on the bike!
When tying into a trailer, I try and use I.K.'s triple tree method. It's foolproof! I don't tie it down to the stops though but i do use slip hooks rather than open hooks!

Guys if you are not in a huge hurry, I am going to make a few of these up in the next week or two. they will be similar to the 'tyre down' setups but a lot cheaper I'll keep you posted.
I think sometimes making a one off item can be a lot of head pain when buying a item already tried, tested and improved is easier with no head pain. Anyway this sport that we love doesnt come cheap. Make sure you post pictures of your tie down.
