Tying Down Bike on Trailer advice.

I've found that if I DON'T tie my bikes down on the trailer with the front suspension fully compressed, then the tiedowns can be under less than full compression when the trailer hits a bump, and the lack of tension on the tie downs allows them to let go of the bike, with the bike falling over. (into the other bike on the trailer, unfortunately- the wheel arches of my trailer stop the bikes from falling anywhere than inwards- guess that's better than falling off onto the road.) So far in three years of transporting bikes this way, none have blown a fork seal.

This set-up saw the MFP12 transported to Eastern Creek for 3 hours with nary a move......

There was 1 additional tie-down used across the back of the trailer, using the rear footpegs as a 'loop' point, simply to stop the rear of the bike from moving across the flat trailer floor. If you had a full-length channel, the rear tie-down is pretty much redundant.

This method is only applicable to those bikes with a hollow front axle.......and as I-K says, if you run 2 or 3 bikes together that are riding on their own suspenion, make sure that they do not foul footpegs on engine covers etc.....

On a bike with normal forks, you can loop the tie-down around the fork leg directly above the lower, fatter part of the fork. Tied tightly around here, the tie-down is then attached to a tie-down point. This method also allows the bike to ride on its own suspension (as per the Wasteland method), and ensures that fork seals will never blow.

MX bikes are the worst for blowing seals.......those under-guard alloy brackets from Geoff Ballard are worth the money !!!

There's those, or you can just crack the air bleed screws on the fork caps when you've got the bike tied down.

I just got back last week from a trip to PI and back via EC and after 4180.1 kms with both tyres in channel, a tyre down, and a rok strap (flat ocky strap) holding down the front wheel, with no incident, i reckon the tyre down is well worth the money!! It takes me about 1 minute to tie the bike in by myself, and about the same to get it out again.

It takes me about 1 minute to tie the bike in by myself, and about the same to get it out again.

So if you use the tyre downs you only really need to stabilize the front with something..correct?

not even stabalize it, just tie the rim to channel, so it doesnt bounce out of the channel if you go over a nice bump...

For the price of 1 Tyre-down, I could knock you up about 6 sets of Wasteland tie-downs........they end up around $30 each for everything you need..........but the Tyre-downs look heaps nicer !
