As for words becoming more phonetic, right or wrong isn't there surely some logic in having words actually spelt like they sound? Does anyone here actually think spelling Knife with a K makes sense? (Certainly not that 'thx' and 'ppl' is phonetic..)

Language evolves just like everything else; it is unreasonable to expect it to stay stagnant while the rest of the world and its people change.

Fair enough, but text language isn't phonetic (ie. spelt like it sounds) and, anyway, there is already an international phonetic alphabet (and a few similar specialist ones). Text is just a bastardisation of written English - a set of abbreviations to fit with the old requirements of texting - and in THAT context I don't have a problem with it. Everywhere else, it's just a public wank - IMHO Language does and must evolve and, like everything that evolves, it has some dead ends. Text language looks like being one of those, evolving to fit a specific set of circumstances, but dying a natural death when text messaging is overtaken by some other form of technology, with just a few of the more common examples surviving.

And, no, using the international phonetic alphabet would not be a good idea - it has 107 letters for consonants and vowels, 31 diacritics which further specify those sounds, and 19 suprasegmentals, which indicate qualities like length, tone, stress, and intonation.

Since when does a stereotype about your hobby determine who you are and what you're like? Sure the idiots of the human race seem to have an attraction to bikes, but many (most?) bikers aren't idiots.

I can't fluently read the badly written posts, so anybody that doesn't bother writing with normal words and normal structure is wasting my time and making themselves look like idiots. Although usually the worst offenders never have anything useful to say anyway, so you don't miss out on much if you ignore them.

Hallelujah !! Its hard enough deciphering some posts where people simply misspell there words (teh instead of the being one of the most common and annoying examples) - and simple laziness when using a keyboard (using text shortcuts when you are not on the phone...
