Buying a bike in Sydney

Hopefully I've had the right of passage in the newbie bit, had the p*ss ripped out of me name, our sporting heritage and any pretensions i might have had of England being a green and pleasant land
But I've had a few counseling sessions and now feel confident enough to post amongst you.

So, I'm over there in less than 4 weeks and need a bike.
Been looking on bikesales and have started to go off the idea of a 9R and now quite fancy either a new Z750 or..... a new gsxr6oo ...sorry
How do things work in Oz, is the price you see the price you pay, are there any "extras" to be added on to the advertised price, or can you go in with cash in your hand and haggle?
Is there 'owt else I need to consider, not sure how much insurance and "rego" will cost, maybe some of my fellow poms on ere could give me a idea on how to compare things with UK.

Hey, 4 weeks and then we can REALLY start taking the piss!!!!!! We have just been warming up Jinjaminger!!!!


Now, as for Z750 or (how fucking dare you) GSXR600!! It really depends on what you are doing with it! If it's just for running up the local racer road on a sunny sunday, then Gixxer! If you plan to do more commuting than anything....the Zed! But, if you want to commute, do the scratcher road on a sundee AND ride to Phillip Island or do long trips (remember, Oz is a big country, combined, our dunnies would take up more space than the entire Island that is England!!!) then I would reccommend the 9!!!

I've owned recently in order.....2005 ZX6R, Honda Hornet 900 and then a ZX9R. The 9 is a keeper! I'm not intending to sel it...ever! It's that good over here. I go for rides regularly, and not all of our roads are billiard table smooth. Actually none are....they are bumpy little feckers for the most part. But the 9 is one bike that copes with those types of roads far better than any Gixxer, R1, CBR!!!!

Now as for additional costs when purchasing a muddaboik! All you have to do is...... If the bike is already registered and you buy from a dealer Just pay Government Stamp Duty and a registration transfer fee!In NSW (A NS Welshman can correct me) stamp duty is 2.5% of the purchase price rounded up to the nearest $200 or market value whichever is the greater. Plus a small $36 (Once again it varies in every state so this is about the average) transfer fee for the registration of the bike.

When you're ready, just put up a post as I am sure one of the Sydney siders would be more than happy to go bike shopping with you to ensure no one takes advantage of a lack of knowledge about Oz bike values or procedures. If none of them stick there hand up PM me and I'll assist next visit to Sydders. (I'm up there almost twice a month!)

Always haggle...
You'lll get a better price private but its a little more risky, only a little though as some dealers aren't much better.

ZX9r's seem to be great value atm...

Rego and green slip (3rd party insurance for ppl not vehicles) is about $500 to $600 a year depending on age and bike.
Full comprehensive insurance is about $600 to $1000 again depending on bike and rider age...

Another fuggin pom in Sydney...... phaaark are you lot trying to make a comeback. We just got some new pommy neighbours who got off the boat about a month ago. Nice people though .

Now when you lob here head somewhere in the north western suburbs, the people are very nice you know.

Ferrchrissake though don't buy a bloody Suzuki. The last thing you need is to give us another reason to take the piss. Good luck with it

As Madkaw said check out the intermanettyweb thingo! and buy your gear before you come over as it'll cheaper where you are! (not a Helmet though! it won't be legal here! )

One other point if you're buying from a dealer. As well as haggling for the bike, also try hitting them up for a discount on any bits of gear or aftermarket bits you might like or need. Even when they're reluctant to do much of a deal on the bike, they'll often be happy to give a discount on extras, which can often work out to a handy bit of change.

If you decide to buy privately get a REVs (regerster of encumbered vehicles) check or a WOVR (written off vehicle register)check done, REVs tells you if bike is stolen or if money is owed and the WOVR will give you the whole shooting match.

Here in QLD the dealers are obliged to inform you that your about to buy a repaired write off, dunno about the rest of the country.

Still not made up my mind, the 9 does seem to be well liked and well suited for he roads out there.
Went looking at them the other day and they seem huge compared to the 6r C1 I've just sold.

Would love a 10, had an R1 for a while but decided it was a bit too mental for the road
