For those who like Xrays

Post by ty »

My 'helmet-hang-up' topic got lost in the last crash, so a new topic it is.

I had a follow-up appointment with the doc today after the accident where I broke my back in 3 places 9.5 weeks ago.
Still working from home, but things progressing well.

I thought some might be interested in a pic of the xray as some seem to go for that ;)
T6 was shattered, T8 and T9 just had fractures.
So here 'tis - this is was a vertebrae looks like after going for a dive over a bonnet and landed square on your head...

Mate, you're lucky you can still walk . Did they fuse the T6 and T7 together, I can't see any remnant of the disc left...

It's been an interesting week for xray pics. One of the guys from work broke his left humerus snowboarding a few weeks back. Snapped cleanly, straight through with the rest of the arm dangling. Came back to work Monday with the pics, pretty graphic. One of the other guys had major back (I think) surgery, his back xrays are full of metalwork, so the conversation was "You think THAT'S bad, have a look at this...".

...Actually in hindsight I didn't see the second guy's xray. I'm presuming seeing he has just come back from a long layoff due to the back operation that is was the post-op xrays, but I haven't seen metalwork used in back injuries. I wonder if maybe he had screws in something else...

One of the girls I used to work with years ago had pics of her brother's leg after a major motorcycling accident, he had a big titanium rod up the middle of his femur. She said he used to set off metal detectors at airports, but I never knew whether she was having a lend of me...

Get better soon mate!

A mate of mine got rear ended and went head first into the boot lid of the car in front doing very similar damage to his spine as Tony has. He was given two options, one lay in bed for ages and let the bone fuse itself, or two have an operation and get a groovy titanium tube put in. Option two meant he'd be out and about sooner so he went with that. Still a long recovery and he lost flexibility in that bit of his spine, but they definitely do put metalwork in spines Mick ;)

Glad to hear things are coming along well Tony 8)

Nothing was deliberately fused - ie no operation.
They've just left things to heal themselves.
After 4 days in ICU they decided everything was stable enough to not need an op.
If the bone fragments were still moving around they would've had to operate - very lucky.
If you have no fear, you're not going fast enough.

I have one of them too and I can confirm that it doesn't set of metal detectors.
Too much soft tissue and bone around it.
