A couple of things happened in the last couple of days that got me thinking.
Last night I went to a 50th birthday party of a friend-of-a-friend. There were probably 60 or 70 people there, mostly roughly 50 years or so old. They rode around together in the 70s and 80s in Sydney and most still have a bike of some description. How many bikes were ridden to this party? ONE! (mine!) Sad.....
Got talking to a guy at the carwash tonight who rides a GS1200 BMW. He was complaining to me how 400km is too far to ride in a day and his arse was sore from doing just that today. Guess that is why he didn't opt for the Adventure model with the big fuel tank. Sad....
I'm guessing the moral of these stories are that I don't want to hit 50 or buy a BMW!

400km thru the twisties....well i reckon i can get abt 7-800km if they are fun enuf!!
that being said..with draconian speed laws, 400km means 4-5hrs on the bike..unlike the good ol days where 400km meant 2hrs on the bike
And when did this 'good old day' ended ? I heard it's around the 80s ?

Hey Plane. I rode Toowoomba to Melbourne return in a week last December. (4000km) I only drive for work. I've done nearly 50000km on my shitbox GT, which I've had for just over 18 months, and it is just one of the bikes I ride regularly. I wrote this thread because I think it is sad to have a party of long-time motorcyclists, none of which turn up on a bike. Was only having a slight stab at BMW riders too. My mate from Canberra/Nowra rode up to Tooowoomba this weekend on his.

I think so long as you keep riding and hanging around with like minded lunatics you stay mentally young (or juvenile as my wife puts it), which is what counts. That's what I keep telling myself now that I'm closer to 50 then 40 anyway
The GS1200 rider needs a big dose of HTFU. The 10 didn't kill my arse on the PI trip for the Supers, although in one minor concession to my bot I did have a sheepskin

50th birthday party .........toss back a few beers or more ...a red or two or three or four......what the hell a couple spirits ...a port and coffee later.........now ride home ......my guess is they were acting their age and responsibly ( possibly for a change) persons unknown to me..( apologies to them)... the distance thing guess some people dont want to plonk their ass on a bike all day..so what..smittys on the money for vic..and you can do the island both ways in less than a day..... unless you disapear off the h'way and majorly tour gippsland. some nice twisty bits that bring you out a little west of latrobe valley power stations
the best part of being fifty and i'm over.....is the ability to look both ways...back (fuck we were good ) forward lets see.........???

I also can relate to Craig by saying : "the older I get, the better I was".....
About a year ago down at EC i've seen an old guy ( I hope he doesn't mind me using the term "old") who was riding a classic Ducati. A couple of young ones started it up for him, before he swung his leg over and off he went... having fun.
He was late 70's maybe 80 ... not bad... doing what he enjoys, that's what it's all about
I agree with smitty, there is nothing wrong with 50, I'm 59 and ride a 12, have ridden to the Gold Coast three times over the past 2 years, 8-9 hrs each way and only stop for fuel and a snack (720 klms each way), the only thing age does is make you more experienced and a little more cautious. Go the almight 12.
