Not a new bike, but a new car...

We are considering buying a new Holden Rodeo Dual Cab pickup LX 4x4.

We currently have a Rav 4, which has been great fun. Sometime ago we decided that we wanted to do more 4WDing than we can with the Rav 4, but had to wait until I finished uni before we bought a new car. Before we got serious about that decision, we were considering the a new Rav 4 or a Holden Captiva. We have decided that we particuarly want a diesel 4WD. We really like the Prado, but we don't need 7 seats, so we have ruled that out. We could use the ute for moving the track bike, and if we want to take the bikes to Victoria. Most of the time we would have a canopy on it though, for the storage room. We likde the HiLux, but it is quite costly, looked at the Triton, but I have had a bad experience with Mitsubishi and it has put me off the company. Holden have a good deal on the Rodeo Dual Cab LX 4x4, $36,600 drive away with a/c included, and I would try to screw them down on a nudge bar and a tray liner. This deal ends on the 30/09. Normal price with a/c is about $41,000 before drive away costs.

Does anyone have experiences, good or bad, with them? How friendly are they as the everyday car? I commute in the car to work, so I would be driving it 90% of the time. Also, we are thinking about starting a family mid-late next year, so what about a capsule and baby seat in the rear of the dual cab? Any other comments?

My girlfriend currently has a hilux sr5 as her work car with all the mod-cons and previously had a (2wd) rodeo (the '05 model, same as madkaw's i think), the hilux is quite a nice ute to drive and feels more like a tall commodore to drive than it does an oversized ute. Both of them had a canopy on them, so it made iteven more of a challenge to reverse park them (i found i am better reverse parking the hilux than i am the rodeo). The rodeo i found was a bit more like a small truck to drive compared to the hilux. Driveability wise they are both good, I don't think they've had many problems in her workfleet (i.e. common flaws), they had them in the shop for dickheads reversing into them more often than they had them in for problems.

Another thing to keep in mind is the 4x4 is taller than the 2wd one and would handle differently, so all i've said here might be useful or plain useless. But I've driven about 5 thou km in the current hilux and two in the old rodeo and i've enjoyed driving the hilux far more.

We have two at work one TD and a v6, both good cars(coming from a ford man) no problems but they can be very very thirsty, the bosses v8 is better on fuel

If buying new or near newthe triton turbo diesel and mazda bt50 turbo diesel will shit on very other ute.

I would encourage you to reconsider the Toyota. I am aware of some horrible TD Rodeo experiences over the years. I hear very little in this regard from Toyota owners. If having to go alternative due to costings, then the BT50 is well worth a visit. The Bitsamissing will have the worst resale value this side of a Lada Niva!!!

A mate of mine runs a ute/truck rental business up here and he only runs Mitsubishi Tritons. Whether he gets a deal from mitsu' or not I don't know, be he never seems to have any problems with them and he is not affiliated with any one brand as such.

I had an 03 Holden Rodeo dual cab (current shape), it was a 2wd (same chassis, interier, etc as 4wd) LT, dual fuel (LPG petrol). It was good for a ute but really had nothing on the current range now available. The ride was average and the turning circle was terrible. When on petrol it would use about 13L/100 and about 15 on LPG. It was very unimpressive power wise and when towing the caravan was a real dog.
That aside, we had 2 years of generally trouble free driving in it, the only problems being the black box for the LPG and for the last couple of months was using a huge amount of oil and blowing smoke
So we cleaned it up and traded it.

We wanted a 4wd dual cab diesel ute so we can claim it as a work vehicle. We checked out all the new ones and settled on the Triton.
The Nissan rated the best in the tests, but was about 6 or 7 thou more, and the triton was a very close 2nd in the ratings.
You get the hard cover, nudge bar, bluetooth all std in the Triton, they are extras in the others.
One of the big factors for us was to claim as a 100% work vehicle it has to be a 1 tonne carry load and neither the nissan nor toyota was, the triton is. The rodeo rated badly, looked the same as our old one and was more expensive so we didn't really consider it.
We've had the Triton for about 6 months now and its been fine, once we had the chip re-flashed with the latest software.
Its a personal choice, but I think it looks better than the others, some luv em, some hate em...

Cost us about $41500 on the road with tint and tow bar include, and abn discount. That was in March so should be cheaper now as the Aus dollar is much higher.

Funnily enough, I have been considering a ute to replace the Clio. Just a basic 1 tonner, and so far everyone reckons the BT50 is the best thing going...! Good hearing it from so many sources...
