So, I test rode the 2007 Z1000.....

Post by Stereo »

I am in the market for a new bike, and one of the bikes I had long been considering a Z-1000...

There is something about the styling of the Zed that I have always loved... When they first came out and had the gold coloured double piped mufflers I thought they were cool, but it was very much a love it or leave it situation.... The 2007 model has a bizzare set of pipes which are even more inclined to bring on a love/hate conversation... But I LOVE em!

Image

Styling: I mean look at this bike, it is a thing of beauty... The lines on it are so agressive that pitbulls try to avoid making eye contact! If you didnt know any better, you could park this bike next to a few heavily modified streetfighters and it would win the beauty pageant... I think its Grouse! Interesting fact #1, it doesnt come in green (in aus) and it also isnt available in the very chic matt/metallic blue of the previous model.

Riding it: So, the dealer gave me the keys and I jumped on. The first thing I noticed was the riding position. Naturally when jumping from a SuperSport like my 03 ZX6R, it is going to be more upright, but I hadnt expected it to be quite so much. The seat height was also a fraction lower than my ZX6, but fortunately not so much that it made me feel silly (I am 6'2").
One thing that I also noticed is that it is incredibly comfortable... I have no doubt that I could ride this three times as far as my ZX6R and still feel comfortable. The lack of fairings didnt seem to matter so much as far was wind resistance goes... that little front guard does a suprisingly good job of keeping the wind off. It was easier on the knees, butt, forearms and back..... after riding the ZX6 it was like a massage from a swedish masseuse...

Engine power: I had thought that jumping from a 636 to a Z1000 would be such a difference in power that I would be intimidated, but the power delivery on this bike was incredibly friendly.... I have to admit that I was a little dissapointed.. Dont get me wrong, it has a very powerful engine, and rolling on the throttle in any gear instantly delivers a smooth increase in power; but there is no "powerband".... which is something that is quite an addictive thing when you ride a supersport bike. To be honest, I noticed the engine power of the Z1000 most once I swapped back to my 636 and it was missing.

Cornering: The salesman from Race Replica told me to take my time, and find some twisties; and who am I to argue with a professional; I know of a spot out the back of Hoppers Crossing and made my way there. These roads are full of little short twists with a few high speed long sweepers thrown in for good measure. Cornering was one thing I was probably most worried about with this bike but I was surprised at how the bike felt, it was fun.... I mean, a LOT of fun.... I guess it was because I was so much more upright than on the supersport bike, throwing the bike into a corner involves a lot of movement.... and it makes you feel like you are a super motard world champion.... I dont think I stopped grinning the entire time I was riding....

Things I would do this bike if I bought it:
1. I realy needs something to stiffen up those handlebars.... You can get a Rhenthal bar stiffener, they are not expensive.
2. Steering dampner on the front. This bike really needs it, that front wheel gets really light.

Overal impression: I would be in the process of purchasing it right now, I told the sales guy before I left exactly what my budget was, they came back with a price only a few hundred dollars over that..... When I told them my budget I really wasnt kidding..... so they miss out..... or I miss out, whichever way you want to look at it.
The world is round. It has no point.

Awesome bike Eelko, a different kinda fun from the zx6, but fun none the less. You may find you'll want the springs played with after a while though.

As for price, did you mention you were a KSRC regular who attended the Race Rep sponsored Halls Gap weekend? If you didn't that may be enough to swing the deal. Kris is a very reasonable chap.

havent ridden the 07..... BUT im a big fan of my 06.... theres just things about the zed i love...

i reckon nakeds/fighters look tuff... and greeny keeps telling me "its NOT a fighter"...but ur right..up against a good fighter, it still looks the goods...

coupla things mate- the riding posy is good, and comfy on a decent ride too..lots of fun thru the hills- however a long trip like HG, u will get a sore bum- theres more weight thru ur bum cheeks than with a zxr (or my cbr) which has more weight on ur wrists and inner thighs if u know wot i mean...

the bars felt ok to me- but i put aftermarket drag bars on..they are soon to come off as i wait for my new renthals to arrive...

a few nice touches can be made when the budget allows..but as a commuter/city bike its really fun and comfy- and i find vision is really good- because ur sitting up so high, headchecks etc are so much easier and isnt such a strain...

i miss the fairings on really cold, long rides (like HG) or in that rain...but in the warmer weather ur legs dont get as hot as the fairings dont trap the heat.....

overall...they are a fun bike...

have u considered an 06?? or u like the upgrades of the 07?? ...if ur budget is a little tight for an 07, u might pick up an 06 as a runout more in ur budget??

Great review mate. Tanya did one a while back too, would have been good to compare opinions, but I think it got lost in the meltdown

i mustnt be riding that hard??

havent had it get too close to the ground....

ask wattie wot he thought of the clearance of pegs.... he rode faster than me...

u can get rear sets for em, u can change the pegs (taking hero blobs off gives an extra inch)....and my pegs are abt 15mm thinner than the ones on it standard...

I have just bought the 750 and all in all, it is awesome. I have found the paint seems to scratch really easily (i scratched it today with my finger on my glove, i did get black though, does anyone know a good way to combat this, i have a strip tank protector and i just 3M covered the ducktail).

I have found the bike to ride quite sedately until you get over the 6500 rev mark, then it picks up very quickly. They corner like nothing else on the road and i completely understand the super motard remark, after throwing the demo around some corners i felt the same way.

As for the look, my daughter pointed out when i took her to the shop to sign the trade papers on the ZZR......it looks like a face thats angry with you. I think it looks like the transformer logo (it also makes transformer noises when you put the key in the ignition) :D

Good review, I still think I'll end up back on a Z1000 one day ;)

On the previous model the hero knobs and side stand (especially side stand) had some cornering ground clearance issues but most peeps wouldn't even notice it. The stand bent out of the way for me after a while but was a bit interseting up to that point. Take the hero knobs off and you'll have enough clearance to get every bit of your tyres evenly worn.

If the 07 is anything like the earlier model I'd try to get the shop to come to the party as I really miss mine ( ;) Tanya ;) can I have a swapsie soon).

Sure Richard :D

But take an 07 out first, it's a completely different bike to the 06 :)
